I’d strongly suggest Google Career Certificate on Data Analytics more than any bootcamps.
I don’t think boot camps are necessary but can be helpful.
Best initial steps IMO
-learn python
-learn sql
-learn at least one Data viz platform (tableau, data studio, looker etc)
Sqlzoo is good for sql practice
Data camp, freecodecamp.com, Coursera have lots of great courses. Lots of free courses to save money.
Skip the boot camp and just jump into an entry level analyst role. Boot camp will give her 30% of the training she’d just get on the job. In a career shift like this, time is what she wants to optimise for, and if she can start entry level somewhere it’s going to put her light years ahead of coming out of a boot camp.
As a prospective employer I’ll tell you I give no recognition nor assign any value to boot camps on your resume
I agree that bootcamps don't carry as much value to some employers, but if you're entry level with zilch experience, it's incredibly hard to get in the door if your background is something completely different (being a pharmacist).
I would strongly recommend making a portfolio and making a GitHub with some of the projects she works on. One thing one of my friends did was make a few YouTube videos discussing what they were learning in SQL and Python. Recruiters and the people interviewing them loved that! Best of luck!
Where are you located? My husband’s company will hire career pivots and new grads and they do a six week bootcamp twice per year. Look at 3Cloud Solutions.
Nice, is there a reference you can provide while talking to them and an email I can use to get in touch, to get things rolling ?
First & foremost learn Excel from Coursera's "Business Essentials" Specialization.
Then learn SQL through KhanAcademy and the YouTuber Alex the Analyst. Also, work on SQL Analytics projects to actually get some hands-on experience with SQL. Courses alone will not help at all. Go through this 8-week SQL challenge if you can't get projects: https://8weeksqlchallenge.com/
Learn how to use some Data Visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI or maybe some other.
Finally, learn Python or R for Data Analysis, whichever is more common in your city.
I am not a Data Analyst yet myself but am learning how to be one. I made the mistake of learning everything except SQL only to realize that you won't really get hired as a Data Analyst if you don't have experience with SQL.
Hope this helps.
Google and Udacity are good bootcamps in my opinion, but it is utterly essential to build a great portfolio. Also, has she ever consider this pivot through a Bioinformatics (or similar) position? Already being a pharmacist, the career pivot might be smoother
One thing people are leaving out here is networking. I switched careers into data and made a great portfolio but the networking and LinkedIn is where it's at to really get a chance without sending 150 applications
I feel like it really depends what type of ‘data analyst’ she is leaning towards. For my team, showing that you can thoughtfully pull out learnings and communicate them clearly rather than solely being able to crunch numbers is the most important. I can teach tools & specific skills. Just something to keep in mind!
