Paternalistic Hierarchy: how can you manage?
Husband worked for a company that did something similar. Overpaid half the employees the week of Christmas( pd every 2 weeks) Yet didn't pay the other half. A day later when they realized what happened, Payroll came in on Christmas eve to distribute checks to the unpaid employees and contact the overpaid employees advising them not to spend the money, that they would have to deduct the money back. Some had already went Christmas shopping, other wanted to pay it back immediately, However they waited 6 weeks before beginning deductions at $300 a clip. Some overpaid employees suddenly found themselves in a bind. So yes. They can promise something and take it away, they can also give you something and take it back. Especially if there wasn't a contract stating that the raise was part of your employment.
