Tarchovsky, because I’m a pretentious film snob and his stuff simultaneously puts me to sleep while fascinating me.
This one, and Takashi miike

Honestly, from the second I saw Old Boy and Snowpiercer, I just realized Korean thrillers/dramas are just the best in the world.
I need to add this one to my list.
Hayao Miyazaki because...legend.

Wild tales. Argentine anthology film. Amazing.

AD2 I watched on the theaters and had no clue what the movie was about so the intro really got me. But my favorite one is the road rage story.
The Three Amigos: Guillermo Del Toro, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Alfonso Cuarón. Quite possibly the best directors in the world right now.

I was severely disappointed by Pans. And Hellboy was pretty forgettable for me. Don’t know what to say, but despite several attempts, I can’t seem to get on board with the guy.
Yorgos Lanthimos & Hayao Miyazaki
Team Yorgos!
Okay I’ll give you three foreign films that rule that were released in the last three years:
2021: Titane
2020: Another Round
2019: Parasite
Bong Jong
Also really like Guillermo Del Toro
They create their own worlds within our world.
Similar to Tarantino.
Have a like 😂
RRR by S.S. Rajamouli is a masterclass of setup and payoff. Non stop upstaging each big action set piece before it. It’s an epic war bromance rom com musical superhero action film.
It rules
Also, if anyone in this thread has ever held out on watching the Soviet anti-war film Come And See because they don’t want to traumatize themselves - I did that, too, for a very long time. I was very scared of watching it. A few months ago, I finally bit the bullet and watched it. I shouldn’t have waited so long. It’s a masterpiece.
Nothing will make you hate war more than this movie. It’s deeply sickening and horrifying, but the film is a masterpiece. There is nothing that even comes close to it in the genre. I highly recommend you see it if you have been holding out.
It’s one of only a few movies I would give a perfect 10/10 rating.
The Hidden Fortress inspired the Star Wars series, so yeah. I'm pretty impressed by that alone
Memento (is a foreign film for me). Whatever film from Almodovar is excellent. Irreversible (dunno If that's the official name in English, but it's a French film...thought story but amazing film n photography direction).
Kurosawa is an absolute genius. I really wish there was someone with his eye in cinema today.
I think the closest was kiarostami. They were friends. unfortunately, he passed away in 2016.
Jean-Luc Godard, Wong Kar Wai, & Ozu.
Christopher Nolan, Hayao Miyazaki, Quentin Tarantino, Peter Jackson, Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Ridley Scott, Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook.
