NCIS Special Agent here. I must attend at least part of this internal training to recertify, but there's a chance I'll quit before the allotted time. Is there any leeway for me to make it out without triggering the $8,922 obligation? Feds are going below the belt to retain their talent. 😭💀

You're going to get the same answers here as you did on your earlier post. This isn't below the belt - it's a pretty common practice. And a taxpayer, I don't want you getting out of it. Is this recertification something you have to do to keep your job or is it optional?

OP, a clawback is fairly standard in pretty much all types of companies/orgs. For example, I worked at a firm where they sponsored employee visas but it came with a 2-year commitment. If they left early, they would pay it back. The business is investing in you - and if you're not willing to see that through, why shouldn't they get their money back?

As a fellow federal employee, do you not have a union you can talk to about this and see if they can help? That would be my first call.

I agree. It would be more convenient and faster that way. Being a union member can really make a lot of difference.

Just realized I can’t contribute to a Roth since my income is too high (I think). TC ~190k and wife makes around 90k. I’ve only been contributing for a few months now at the advice from a CFP friend (he never asked me what I made). Should I go back to 401k contributions or is there a better option here? I expect my retirement income (via pension) to be higher than my HHI now.

Are there any resources for crafting good times entries? First year here. I went from being too general to too specific in my time entry narrations. One of the partners I work for strikes out my time when he doesn’t like my narrative. Any tips or advice?

Hey 🐟🐟

I’m hiring a Technical Recruitment Lead for our team. We’re a health technology company with offices in Canada & the US. We’re nearly 900 employees and reached 700Mil in revenue this year. Our sights are set on reaching unicorn status in the next few years 🦄. We’re privately held with a possible future IPO so it’s a great time to join at the right time if you’re interested in helping fuel the growth to take a company public.

Quitting before finalizing offers?

I’m at post onsite and negotiation stage at a couple places but it may take another month or 2 due to either hiring freezes or general slow processes.

I want to quit now to go on vacations that I held off during prep. Does it make much difference when I negotiate offers? Like if my upcoming unvested RSU would be (partially) matched, and they find out I quit somehow, is it no longer matched? Other potential snags?

Already burned most of my PTO interviewing.

Fishes, how are oniste opportunities in Accenture??

Additional Posts in Labor & Employment Attorneys

Hi everyone! I recently became an L&E attorney representing employers. It was my goal to practice in this field, and I finally have the opportunity. What do you recommend for a new attorney to succeed in L&E? What do you wish you knew when you started? Books or blogs that you recommend to improve my knowledge? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Would a DUI during law school pose a problem two years later on a background check with either JL or Littler (I got through character and fitness with it during bar app. time) ?

For those who left a big 4 for in house, how do the comp, hours, and work compare? I’m a senior associate, major market, likely will be partner in the next couple of years, and love the work—but I’m getting really frustrated by the comp and firm management. I’m in the early stages of thinking through various options.

Anyone know the hour requirement for firms like Littler, Ogletree, etc?

Any advice for someone switching from EPLI ID to a plaintiff’s firm? Thanks in advance!

Any recommendations on law primers that have been updated rather recently?

Littler CaseSmart remote jobs- anyone here work in this capacity? I'm interviewing and would love an "honest take" about how accurate the 1,500 hour billable requirement is, what the work life balance is, whether it is possible to take one or two week long vacations a year, etc.

I'm a senior associate at a biglaw firm (currently billing 2,300/year (including client and non billables) who does not mind taking the pay cut if it actually means less work and no business development!

Currently a first year doing insurance defense. But I’m dying to transition to L&E. I have the courses, internships, journal note all in and around L&E. However, I’m 8 months into my first job doing solely insurance defense. Any tips on how to transition? Anyone make the transition before and know how to sell state court litigation experience to a L&E firm? I’m in a major market.

Ok, maybe this has been done before, but I want to get a real life sense of the difference between EPLI and Private L&E (management side) practices. Let's do a poll:

1.) Primary source of business: EPLI or Private Companies?

2.) Number of matters you are currently working on

3.) Average billable rate (your year)

4.) Normal working hours/wk

5.) Percentages: Litigation vs Counseling

6.) Type of firm: ID, Big 4, Boutique, BigLaw, etc.

I'll kick things off in comments.

What is Littler’s WFH policy? Do you ever foresee them going back in the office full time?

What are associates looking for either as 1st years or junior associate positions? My firm is looking to expand and take on one or two new associates but we aren't getting any applicants. Not sure how to spice up our job posting to entice more attention.

I’m currently at a “Big 4” employment law firm. I’m looking to lateral to a big full service law firm so I can get paid more. Any suggestions for a law firm with a good employment law practice group and good work life balance?

Are another round of salary increases likely for the big 4?
