Need a reality check. If I’m in FP&A but hate accounting, am I in the wrong career? I have no problem with accounting basics bc that’s normal in most finance jobs, but I’ve been asked to take on more technical things like depreciation/assets under construction from scratch

Hang in there! Currently looking for another job

I was in FP&A for 7 years in 2 companies. My first 2 years was straight out of college and I felt the same way as you. I was a glorified staff accountant. I switched to a different company and actually drove decision making. All my projects were with executives and I got to present to the C suite. Same title… two different companies. I really enjoyed the strategy/project based side to my job and started to dread the budgeting part. I got my MBA and switched into strategy consulting, which I now love. You are young and just need to jump to another company and figure out what you like

Thank you, wow! I will definitely give that a try. I will look for headhunters on LinkedIn, just signed up for linkedin premium free for a month

FP&A can be really broad and depends on the company/team.

I haven't done any technical accounting work. And it's more about analysis and working with business partners, the usual forecast and closing out results.

Sounds like you need to go to a different company. Although you might find aome of the technical accounting work handy when interviewing at smaller companies.

Thanks for sharing, nice to hear from a peer! I initially thought it was my own shortcoming and considered taking more in-depth accounting classes. Then realized I should probably check if others in finance are experiencing the same. I will keep what you said in mind as I search for jobs

Currently a PwC senior associate in insurance doing audit. Things are getting very stale. I’ve debated an internal switch to advisory or seeking an external move. I’ve received a much higher paying position at the Siegfried Group, but I’m unsure if that’s the right move for me based on things I’ve read. The pay plus bonus is substantially more than current Big Four senior salary, but I don’t want to just chase money.

Early into career in Technology Consulting at a large firm (think Big 4). Have some experience in implementation and it has been fine but not where I see myself long term. Trying to figure out what other career paths I can go into such as Data Engineering or Data Analytics. Also interested in AI and Emerging technology such as blockchain.

Any advise and/or recommendations on how to navigate different career paths or any resources (learnings or certifications) to look into?

Thanks!

I took a job I was overqualified for because I thought it would fit into my life (for now) better than an intense, high responsibility role. Plus, it’s a career shift for me into HR. The role has given me a lot of confidence that I can actually do more, but I think the workload is right for me. However, low and behold, my talents have been recognized and I’m taking on more responsibility than the role was benchmarked for. What are your best tips for asking for a raise in this situation?
