Need Advice. Hate my job in ATL and I’ve been trying to get a job in NY. No one seems to like that I don’t live in NY already so thoughts on moving there w/o a job to freelance?

All kidding aside, save enough money to pay NYC rent for 2-3 months, and then come here to freelance. That’s what I did a couple of years ago, and luckily landed a full time job at my first freelance assignment. The market gets tougher the higher you climb, but you should be okay. Take everything seriously once you get here and build an amazing book. NYC is great for a million reasons. Do it or you’ll regret not trying

like

@CW1 no. The nyc market is super saturated from all the layoffs and budget cuts. @OP if you really want a job in NYC don't tell them you don't already live here. Get an interview and just fly yourself out. Or get a freelance gig and fly yourself out and AirBnB until you can get a cheaper sublet from Craig's list.

NYC is the most overrated city to work in. don’t do it.

likehelpful

You’ll hate your job here, too.

likefunny

Dont move here without a job. Seriously.

likehelpful

Don't move without something lined up, or be ready to eat shit for six months to a year. New York is dead as hell for creatives, and all the recruiters are asking if you will move anywhere but NY. Seriously. It's a really bad time to move to NYC.

like

Over saturated on AD’s currently - lots of AD freelancers having difficulty finding work currently, btw I hate my job in NY, you hiring in ATL? 😂

Your book doesn't matter at this point. Awards, ECD friends and luck matter.

I’m going to be posting 2 mid level jobs tomorrow on the job board (once they get posted officially) in NYC (I just moved from Atlanta last week, so I hear ya)

Depends on what agency your at now and why you hate your job. All agencies have issues, it’s making sure you pick a new place that doesn’t have same issues. You should save up, go rent an Air BnB and try to land some freelance first or do the rounds of shops interviewing.

Try Chicago. Lot of agencies and people seem a little happier

Freelance is dead in NYC now. Check in a couple months.

I moved to NYC in 86 with out a job and a place to live You will need to move there and sleep on a friends sofa and you will get a job. I lived there for 8 years. If you are young and hungry , NYC is the best place to thrive. Good luck

Move to NY. You’ll find a job.

I was job hunting for NY jobs out of the Midwest and the back-and-forth travel costs for interviews ended up being worse than just moving to NY without a job.

like

@CD1 maybe. But who's hiring? Seems like a locked up bro town.

I moved to NYC without a job fresh off college. 4k in my pocket . Scary shit. Took 2 month to find a job ! Scariest 2 month of my life but it was worth it.

This is a funny ass thread. Dude or lady - just bite the bullet and move. You’ll find work. But first send your resume to head hunters with your friends NYC address. Then take meetings for a week in the city.

like

Wow thanks guys for all this advice!! I’m also open to other cities and I think I just want to be in a city with a good ad industry (which isn’t ATL). Any tips on finding freelance work when I get there? And anyone have a better suggestion than going to NY? Genuine question

like

I went to NY and found a permalance job within 3 days. No ad school either. It’s not a well known agency, but they do awesome stuff, the people are great so far and the money is good. Full disclosure: I did change my LinkedIn to say I already lived in NY and used a friend’s address in Brooklyn.

(1/2) I started a new job less than a month ago at a large firm with a significant pay increase. I work remotely- which is a special arrangement.
