Don't know what firm you're in, but at Deloitte it will usually come down to the "destination" office and what they are willing to offer. I did a long term move and know a lot of others that have, you basically resign from one firm and get hired by another.
I spent 3 months in Japan. Just say yes and worry about the money later, you're going to love it.
At PwC there are two GM routes I'm aware of: Strategic Deployed and Development Deployed. DD are most seconders. SD is if you are being asked to second to another firm for a strategic reason e.g. built a new team/practice. Generally for P/Ds only. If you're in this group the benefits are significantly better. As I understand it, your housing is paid for and you receive some kind of stipend for your kids education. You probably also get frequent trips back for you and family to your home location. For DDs (I am a M on secondment) it's not too bad - I had 2 weeks hotel accommodation when I arrived and had Relo paid for me as well as 8 hrs(!) Of a Relo consultant to help me find a house when I arrived here. I get a flight back for Mrs and me each year. And the firm does my taxes.
Glad you hid your company name PWC1
Just curious how this happened. Did you apply to an office over or temporary relocate/ assignment? I would love to do something like this but would have to take the pay cut.
Office in Asia was looking for some industry experience that I have. They are willing to move me as I am also interested.
Thanks for such a detailed message P2. My move is kinda long term. Any insights for such a move?
Well an obvious one is salary matching to whichever is highest - either host firm or home firm. Another big one is negotiating the Right of Return which allows you to go back to your home firm at the same grade if your move doesn't work out (I've seen it not work out for family reasons and market reasons too). It's good to have for security but there might be limitations. I'd also see if your firm will file for your taxes in your home country as well as your host country. Can't really say much more for somebody at your grade moving as the perks can vary. But I've relocated internationally twice in six years and generally the firm is supportive. Id figure out what your main cost changes are likely to be (housing, kids schooling and childcare if you have them) and negotiate from there.
Right of Return is a good thing to have in writing. Good call P2!
P2, I didn't fully relocate. I'm in the PS practice, and we had work with a US Federal Client with Asian operations. Was a total PITA to work the details with PwC Japan, but I worked there and got to stay in my domestic practice getting USD pay with all local expenses covered. Anyone who says Federal blows just isn't doing it right.
