Need help deciding between two offers. EY-P M&A TSE - 175K - Senior Associate McKinsey Strategy - 165K + 30K sign-on - Associate 5 YOE at Deloitte doing Strategy, M&A and DD, up for Manager in June. No MBA. Chicago office. I do not like working more than 45-55 hours a week and value WLB. Leaning towards EY-P with potential to make Director in 12-14 months. No such conversations with McK on early promo. I’m not a rockstar and will be an average to above average performer. TIA!

McK has the brand value still, so I'd say go that route. As a current EYP employee, the WLB is totally dependent on project just like it is at any other firm. I've had projects where I'm done at 5-6pm and projects where I'm done at 9pm. I've only heard of a few where it's worse than that, but you typically know what you're getting into ahead of starting the project (ODD and CDD typically very high burn).

Lol EYP seldom does CGS

Something to consider to about your EYP offer is that it goes associate, senior associate, consultant, and THEN director (which is the manager equivalent) so I’m not sure how much I would trust that 12-14 month timeline to manager if you’re coming in as SA. Very typical of the firm to bring you in at a lower level with promise of promo and then have things go a bit different.

This is a hilariously (and commendably) self-aware post. They are both sweatshops. Don’t do either if you want <70 hour weeks, and don’t do Parthenon no matter what. May as well get the McK brand if you do bite the bullet.

D5 I operate an open code policy. You Bill what you work.

like

Say goodbye to 45 - 55 per week with those 2 options

like

I dont know really any EYP teams that regularly work less than 55 a week on average. T2+ is notorious for long workweeks

likesmart

Anything more than 30/wk is bad wlb

likefunny

Agreed

like

McK. WLB will be just as bad at EYP and the brand name is worth more than 10k. Early promos, unless in writing, almost never happen.

like

Right! Deloitte plays the same ‘wave the carrot of early promo’ game. The hiring team != the project teams who will ultimately decide promo.

likesmart

Ofc McK.. you’ll make Manager in 1 year or so, Associate Partner in 3 years or so and Partner in 5 years or so. Your comp will be 200-300 as M, 400-500 as AP and 700+ as P. Rough numbers.

like

McK2 what type of studies have afforded these hours? Or are you just setting table stakes at the beginning?

helpful

EYP is M&A work and you will not have WLB. Brand of McKinsey is significantly superior and set you up for much better exits. Think McKinsey by a mile, not even close

like

You can get a good WLB at McKinsey if you can get in long implementation projects. These are a small island in a sea of death, but it seems that not many people are fighting over them because implementation isn't very sexy.

likefunny

At EYP. Choose McKinsey.

like

C2 - we also just got compression which was extremely generous. We are now on par with MBB.

like

At this point, I am only evaluating the the ex-McKinsey tag after I am counselled out or leave in maybe 16-24 months. No desire to stay till I make EM. But, at EY-P, I just find that a 2-3 year stint where I can perform well is more realistic.

like

CTL ex-McKinsey will have better exit opps than a strong performer at EYP, FWIW.

likefunny

2 years at mck then bounce with the strong 5 years of Deloitte on your resume and 2 years of MBB. Your options will be much better I also agree that despite what you’ve been told by your team, EYP is typically on par hour wise with MBB... might as well just go to MBB given the chance

like

Take McK. You can make the switch to EY later if you want to. EYP to McK later will be much much harder. Take EYP if you like M&A and want to commit to go up the ladder. But know that if you want this, you will have to work more than 50hr/wk!

like

Just to clarify EYP TSE is the ODD/post-merger practice hence that's why OP is saying that WLB is better which makes sense. The CDD team is EYP Strategy which is a different team that burns through hours. OP you will need to understand that the work that you will do at EYP TSE is not CDD/strategy practice of EYP.

like

Yes. Exactly. I know. I have no problem with that.

like

I just left EY-P, take McKinsey. As some others have said on here, EY-P will be almost as bad WLB as McKinsey (possibly even worse if you’re consistently put on DD’s). But right now the place is a mess. The whole rebrand will likely turn out to be a good move in a few years, but right now it’s causing a lot of cultural challenges. The base salary looks good but bonus is terrible, which is also causing a lot of high performers to move elsewhere. Leadership claims the firm is moving towards strategy, but in reality it’s pretty clear that the real focus is on PMO/implementation type projects. I was also previously at another Big 4 and frankly was very underwhelmed by leadership at EY-P - a lot of PPED’s have been hired directly in from either industry roles or IT implementation type places (IBM, etc), and seemed to completely lack any kind of ability to understand how to appropriately staff projects or develop people. And at the end of the day, as with any Big 4, you also have to contend with the various challenges that come with being part of an audit/tax firm. McKinsey WLB won’t be significantly worse, but you’ll likely be on more interesting projects, make more money, and get better exit ops. It’s a no brainer to me.

like

Join McK and do Ops and you’ll work 50-55h per week

Go for McK. They have the best brand in consulting!

likehelpful

Take them both. You’ll be rich!

like

WFH in both. It'll take a year to CTL you for not getting enough done in either and, in the meantime, you'll be drawing two salaries. 🤣
