If you still enjoy working at your current company and like the team, I would recommend staying. It will be better for your career long term to have that manager experience at a public traded company. You’ll have the SEC reporting experience and better understanding of internal controls, likely better accounting system and processes as well. The private company offer is only slightly higher than your current salary and not significant enough to make the move in my opinion. However if you don’t like your current job and really want to make an exit, do what makes you happy
Thank you!! That is helpful.
I assume you are getting a compensation adjustment for your promotion? If so, use this time as well as your external offer to negotiate your salary increase.
sooner or later you will leave, from individual perspective, make manager and jump to industry is common. Unless you want to work another 4 years and make SM,so you can apply for comptroller directly. The public firm is not that sad if you leave, maybe your SM will be sad, because 2 out of 100 people can make partner, and the other 98 will be manager in industry and with the good memory of the firm, bring the industry client to the firm. This is the way.
Thanks for responding! I should have clarified “publicly traded” vs private. I am already in industry.
What was your reason for interviewing with another company/thinking of leaving your current company?
I took the interview because I was ready to move up from senior and wasn’t interested in internal openings. After I scheduled the interview my company promoted me to manager of a new entity. I went ahead w the interview too bc why not already had it set up. They offered me a better title but I won’t get the SEC reporting experience I am going to get in my current position. Wondering is the better title worth it? (Raise is not huge. 10k if I get the full bonus.)
I decided to stay. It was such a tough decision I went back and forth every hour haha.
