Disclaimer- I am in NO way qualified to give any advice, but thought my observation could be worthwhile as I’ve been working on a search for a VP of HR position. If your goal is to make it up to that level or CHRO, it could be difficult to make it there if you specialize in recruitment, only because people will assume you aren’t a fully rounded HR professional (whether that’s true or not). That said, there are certainly large organizations that have HR divided into the various specialties. So you could still have potential to be a director or vp of talent acquisition, but not sure that would necessarily lead to a CHRO role. Again, no real experience or insight here, but hopefully that perspective helps you think 🤷♀️

Pretty much depends on what you want to do with your career. If you like recruiting and dont mind doing it for years to come, then you could do executive search, independent recruiting, or leading a talent acquisition team. But if you think recruitment could stop challenging you at some point then definitely try to venture out early. More HR generalist work, human capital consulting, L&D, talent development, org design and health are all possible paths especially if you make a lateral move. Most HR leaders I know started in a form of recruiting or search. I personally started in recruitment department 15 years ago and with time moved into general HR, leadership development, executive assessment and succession planning. Good luck 🍀
