By staying out of it 100%. She needs to hire agents etc. and run it by her dad. You are there to provide information if she needs but 0 advice or opinion. Trust your gut about the sword hanging over your head.

It’s a very tricky situation. It is most definitely going to turn out that your FIL will find something to get mad about. Maybe convince them to not invest the $ in real estate right now? The market is insane and you will most likely over pay. Park the money in QQQ or similar ETF instead. I have 5 rentals and they don’t return $ like the equity market and they are a pain to maintain (I manage them myself).

like

What challenges do you face in maintaining rental properties? Can’t property management companies help with it?

like

Is the money still your FIL or your wife ? If it’s your wife then FIL has no say anymore and you as couple can decide what are the best investment option for you guys. Ofcourse your wife should understand the downside. Also, even if things go bad your FIL should have no say in it. However, if she is investing on behalf of your FIL, I would stay a mile away.

like

Yeah, that would be an ideal situation. But my wife and FIL are super close and he has been very successful in his real estate investments in his home country. It might get difficult to untangle my FIL’s involvement.

Treat this situation with kid gloves. Provide options of advisors for her to choose from. Get her in touch with realtors, lenders etc. but do not be a decision maker. Go with her for some house visits, help her form a decision on what might be a good property. Let her come to her own conclusions without recommending any.

like

Do the ground work and provide options to wife and FIL and let them take the decisions. This way you did your duty and made them feel good about taking the decisions. Play it smart

like

Why is your FIL not able to invest the money himself? This seems to be indirect dowry to me

We live in different countries.

… For context, my parents and my IL’s have a very poor relationship which has often strained our marriage. I think this will create another angle of tension. How should I handle this?

If I were you, I would avoid being a part of any deal. Let your wife handle the entire affair.

like

Where (which country) are you planning to buy the rental? In most parts of the world, property is a good investment only when you take out a loan. Else a diversified portfolio of stocks is usually better.

Yes stay out... marital problems get aggravated if money angle comes into picture in anyways

How much money are we talking about? What portion of the net worth of your family and FIL does it represent? Also why rental properties? Why not invest in the stock market?

Just put it in equity investments. There’s nothing wrong you can do, even if he gets made you can’t control markets. There’s more that you can do wrong with rental properties to potentially piss him off

If your FIL GAVE the money to your wife - why should he have any say how it’s spent ? Too much possessiveness. Understanding from your expressions- I would avoid any monetary relationship with such family.

Thanks everyone. For those recommending I stay out of it/provide outside help and let my wife/FIL make their own decisions, how do I communicate this to them without leaving a sour taste?

I think instead of staying out of it, support you wife on it - but let her take the decisions. So you don't become an uninvolved unsupportive person, but don't become involved in taking the ultimate decision. Just support your wife with anything she needs to make a decision.

Does anyone know of where to find remote part time work opportunities for older Indian women? My mom was a part-time after school teacher but has not been doing that due to covid (dad is high risk). Maybe I just miss seeing people at work or seeing people at all. I wonder if we’ll ever get back to that.
