Why isn’t your Partner supportive? Also when you say partner, do you mean your boss or significant other? I’ve taken a similar role in the past at my firm, and it’s only expanded my skills and network internally. It was also less stressful, and led to my next opportunity at the firm. It seems like you want to take it and that the alternative lessens your pay?

Got it! After reading everyone’s thoughts here - I agree, take it if that’s what YOU want to do! There will always be another goalpost to hit for leaders, you need to do what’s best for your mental health, career etc. and 3 months is nothing, it’ll fly by. Your manager sounds a bit selfish tbh. If you were in his place, what would you advise your direct report?

I would pursue the 3 month internal rotation! I was in a similar position a few years ago - I was completely burnt out and wanted to quit my job. I decided to apply for a 3 month internal rotation which got extended to 5 months. I’m soooo happy I did it! I came back from my rotation feeling refreshed and had a totally new outlook on my work ❤️

Ah thank you for the perspective. That’s exactly what I’m hoping for - to come back feeling refreshed.

Do you need this relationship? What about other partners? How committed are you to your current area? Do people always come back after rotation or does it open new doors in firm? Why is partner against it - bad experience in the past, perception, something else? I know some leaders perceive people who do things like this as flight risks. Anyway - more info needed in order to meaningfully weigh in. At my firm (pwc) internal rotations can open good doors to non client facing roles and in general offer a good chance to see how the firm overall operates.

To say no because he wants the possibility of staffing you is selfish. You have to look out for your own interests and now you know clearly you have to do it with him. He’s looking out for his own. Disappointing, but it’s the game. Hopefully when it’s all said and done he’ll respect you for advocating for yourself. I’m on a LOA now to take care of my kids during COVID. I expect to return to my group but am nervous about their perception going back. I’m just doing my best to hold my head high that I’ve done nothing wrong taking advantage of firm programs, and trust that my work was valued enough they’ll be glad when I’m back. It can be a scary feeling though for sure.

I read comments above and I understand the Partner comments to some degree. What troubles me is that what he proposes for you like going part time or taking a leave while it shouldn’t we all know it can have a drag on your career. And the partner thinks these are better alternatives than an internal rotation? Take care of yourself and diversify your network

like

Yes that seems disingenuous. Bet he thinks OP won’t follow through/can’t get medical leave, and plans to staff her anyway if she chooses to go part time. She’d just get to bill less hours.

Are you talking about PTO? It can be a great learning experience from what I hear!

I mean, I think if they don’t have anything for you at that time you can pitch it as a way to bridge the gap between now and when they sell work next. Fact of the matter is, we’re so busy and out of PLs, so no one is sitting on the beach or hiding on P codes waiting for their partner to sell more work. We’re all going to be staffed the second we’re available. I think you can pitch it as a stop gap with some flexibility on the end date so you can align with their timelines again (I think there’s some flex in when PTO ends) when they have work, while at the same time rejuvenating yourself to come back stronger and harder working (and maybe learn something along the way)
