Need some advice. I live in an apartment building and still work from home for the most part. My upstairs neighbors are incredibly loud when they walk around. Their footsteps woke me up out of a dead sleep at 6am this morning (and I was wearing ear plugs). Can I ask them to walk more quietly, or do I need to just deal with it?

No advice, but as someone who stayed in a hotel last night with similar elephants upstairs, you have my absolute sympathy.

Thank you!! Hope you get a good night’s sleep tonight 😂

Check the building rules / condo association bylaws etc. There may be a rule that xx% of everyone's floor needs to have rugs or carpets on it.

Brilliant. Thank you!

I have been there a few times and now refuse to live anywhere but top floor 🥲 I’d ask the leasing office if they can shoot ‘em a note since it’s “quiet hours”, leave them a nice note on the door (most times ppl have no idea they are being noisy), and if it doesn’t improve explore your own background sounds, waking up earlier or ask your building if there’s any top floor transfer options.

like

I’ve been in this situation before as it was during quiet hours and I have definitely complained to office management. You have my sympathy.

like

Are you my downstairs neighbor? My downstairs neighbor notified me of this problem and now I am tiptoeing. I had a herd of elephants livings above me last year and know how bad it is

like

OP: this is your answer. A direct request gets results. BUT just don't take it as an opportunity to start whining about every little thing. You live in an apartment, and noise goes with the territory.

like

Check your lease, if it’s a big building, there might be something about how they’re required to have rugs cover a certain percentage of the floor (mine has that!). If not, you could try asking them to get some rugs? Or not wear shoes in their house if that’s the issue? Other than that, it’s really more of an issue with the building construction than with them if all they are doing is walking. So I’d probably just move if neither of those two fixes help or are possible. Just telling someone to “walk quieter” doesn’t seem very realistic or even appropriate.

like

I also only live on the top floor because I’ve been there too many times. Try to have a friendly conversation first - they may not have a clue how loud it is for you. Try to define times when it’s absolutely crucial for you to have it quiet. Ask how you can do them a favor in return. Or Perhaps buy them a pair of cushioned slippers? That’s a disarming gesture - of course, if they’re jerks nothing will work. Good luck!

Could you knock on the door and speak with them (nicely)? My son and his roommates moved into a new apartment with all hardwood floors. They were walking around with shoes on and moving furniture late into the night (all performers so they are up late/sleep late). Their downstairs neighbors came up to talk with them. They were honestly clueless about how their noise was traveling and were happy to make accommodations.

like

I'm living this now but the kid above me is a college student and is loud every night. His walking is the least of the noise problems I have with him. But you do have my sympathy in the deepest way. My neighbor walks like a freaking dinosaur. Your best bet is to move to a top floor. In the interim try Mack's Earplugs, plus some white/brown noise from Alexa and those headband earphones from Amazon. This trifecta has worked for me in blocking out loud steps from upstairs, loud talking and other annoying late-night habits from my upstairs neighbor so I can get a decent night's sleep.

like

That’s nothing. My upstairs neighbor does that. What’s even crazier is that I hear footsteps nonstop, hours at a time. Like literally nonstop from one corner of the room to another. I start to think somebody is kidnapped there

like

Thanks for all the advice! Agreed with the suggestions that I need to address the issue with them directly. Fingers crossed that it goes well… 🤞🏼

I’ve had two different neighbours living upstairs with the same problem. The first one was nice about it when I wrote them a note. And gave me their number to let me contact them to figure out what caused it. The second one got immediately defensive when they saw the note. Refused to talk to me and got aggressive when the landlord passed the message.

Suffering from crippling work related anxiety lately. Have always found this job stressful at times but with wfh the anxiety is constant and paralyzing and unbearable. I have regular panic attacks, question everything I do, feel like I’m never doing a good enough job and am really down on myself. Part of this I’m sure is that I live by myself and am alone with my thoughts all day, part is that I’m new to the manager role. Any coping strategies??

Hey guys I’m staff2 in audit and will be promoted to senior in June. I would expect around 25-30% raise. Currently 100% remote work & don’t see going back to the office soon. Feel like valuation position is more attractive in long term but think getting lowballed extremely. What do you think?

Has anyone tried doing two jobs at once? Have an okay job that I don’t enjoy, but pays very well. Got an offer for an exciting role that would also pay well but not nearly as well (~$10k less per year). I want to try doing both jobs at once to see which one I like more and decide where to commit. I obviously wouldn’t tell my employers and disable LinkedIn account for awhile but I figured this would be feasible given everyone is remote. Thoughts?
