Need some advice. New job opportunity with a school could be a minimal pay cut but offers full tuition reimbursement on any curriculum. Considering it for the mba, but are mbas really worth it? I’m likely not going to stay in comms forever so maybe this could help me transition to something else? Or is field experience irreplaceable in other areas too?

In my experience MBA’s are valued in marketing and Corps vs. agencies, but you have to decide ultimately whether it’s worth it. If you know you don’t want to stay in Comms, perhaps it would be better to figure out directionally what you would like to do in the future and further your education by getting a qualification that helps that transition. An mba just for the sake of an mba, may not be worth it.

Agree with this. MBAs are definitely valued in corporate environments in house; while comms often has a “fluffy” reputation in many company cultures, communicators with credentials like MBAs or JDs are able to bring weight, strategy and counsel to the business and executives in a way that is typically more respected and helpful in further legitimizing the Comms function. But agree that agencies often don’t care, though some corporate or financial teams might, and I’m sure consultancy’s Comms teams (eg Comms at McK, PwC, etc) would as well.

(IMO the same weight is not held by a master’s degree)

FYI - you have to pay taxes on the free tuition as if it was income so keep that in mind!

You can get $5,250 a year tax free. I spread a degree out over 3 years to maximize this. A $200k MBA isn’t worth it IMO unless you’re going into consulting or investment banking where your salary will be commensurate.

Would the free tuition require you to stay an employee for a certain period of time? If so, I don’t know if it’s worth potentially getting pigeonholed into the higher ed industry. I know some who have gone into education and have had a terrible time trying to get out. At the end of the day it’s a niche industry and not one that’s experiencing a lot of growth like tech or health. I’d be more worried about my future career prospects than the free education.

I’m overwhelmed by the many suggestions online and would prefer to get a suggestion directly from professionals.
