Just left AT&T after an extensive career in sales, so the advice I would give you is to sit tight where you are until the economy improves. If you love calling about 40+ customers a day, poor management, sellers that overlap one another, unrealistic expectations, etc., go for it!! I personally witnessed individuals who came over from Retail Wireless stores who really struggled with the rigor of this position. They loved not working weekends- but it's all the other stuff mentioned above is the challenge. If you have any contacts in the Fiber group, I'd recommend speaking with them just to get an idea as to what to expect if you decided to move on. Another thing to be wary of is the turnover too!! People just disappear and you never see them again...but nobody talks about it. Ha! The pay is going to be a little better depending especially on the compensation side and depending on the level of success you have or not. The reason I highlighted this position is because it's likely the only spot in the company you could transition to coming out of retail. A couple of final thoughts 1) is it possible for you to move up the ladder within your own organization? 2) with the single dad responsibilities stability would be most concerning to me so if I'm you I'm parking where I am just for a period of time until the economy improves...just my 2 cents!! Good Luck to you either way.
I whole heartedly agree with this description of working at AT&T mobility sales. Literally every last point. There are way easier/less stressful ways to make money. I have only been here for 4 months and am looking to escape after 14 years in sales. Any recommendations on other companies to look at?
Look at other wireless companies or even Cradlepoint. They have inside and outside sales roles that they rely heavily on past carrier experience. Good luck!
I was in a similar situation 2 years ago. I made it to ARSM but didn’t feel like there was anywhere else I can go unless I wanted to move to a new market. I started looking at AE roles in the tech world and got a couple of interviews. I found a position as an AE in a tech company. I quickly scaled up. It’s not cold calling and business development rep hands leads to AEs. Just apply and interview to see what’s out there and what fits your work life balance.
Have you thought about pivoting to strategy or consulting? Those two areas would probably meet (or exceed) your salary requirements without requiring cold-calling or other direct sales type activities.
I just don’t know enough about searching for those type of positions. I haven’t had to look for new areas except internally for at least 10 years. Been trying to research pay as some companies are hit and miss on revealing that. Only really looked into square, Edward Jones, wwt, or tech companies of some sort. Although I am open to to anything behinds a head hunter type role. Based in STL and can’t relocate.
Switch to AE. You’re going to cold call. You’re going to hate it. You’ll never go back to retail I promise.
