Need some advice! I'm a recent PhD grad (30 yo) in STEM, and just got some offers from different companies. Particularly, two of them are interesting to me. 1) from a Energy Market Company in Pennsylvania as an Operations Research Scientist, 95k + 15% bonus + very good benefits and generous PTO. It's a very chill job (9-5) with good people but limited opportunity to growth. 2) from a consulting company in NYC as a data science consultant, 130k + 10k signing bonus. Which one you choose? why?

130 in nyc as a phd consultant is too little IMO. Go finance to DOUBLE that figure in nyc

like

Really? They’re lowballing me you mean? I haven’t accepted the offer yet and have room to negotiate.

Depends on if you want chill or non-chill 😊. I have no chill so I’d go #2

like

95 in Pennsylvania is better than 130 in NY Also 9-5 does not equal chill job. That’s still 40 hours a week. A chill job is at max 30 hours a week, usually 20

like

Your pay is utopia for me

Consultancy will provide you better exposure and help you build out your career path. See if there is negotiation on wfm or travel as 130k doesn't last long in NYC. If long term benefits from working in the industry is there then stick to your initial choice.

like

Yes, I’m staying in NJ and commute to NYC if needed.

like

Yeah 130 is looooooow right now for data science PhD

like

Thanks. The position is data science consultant already. I don’t have work experience but have academic experience in data science and operations research

I know this has been done to death, but I'm pretty giddy and don't want to tell family/friends. I PASSED THE 1 MILLION NET WORTH MARK! I won't say I did it all on my own, as I was lucky enough to have parents who paid for my education and also gift me $12k/yr of cash for the last few years. But for someone who was making only 36k 8 yrs ago and has only this month broken six figures for base salary, I'm pretty pleased with myself.
