Need some feedback, I am lateraling into an associate role at a top 25 law firm after several years at government and corporate jobs & have concerns about the background check.

I haven’t made much money in the past few years and have accrued significant debt from credit cards & personal loans, some of which was to help out family during COVID. My credit utilization is at 90% & I’ve been making payments on time. Credit score is at 580 after being at 780 before law school. Will this ding me?

I wouldn't raise it. As I recall, the background check just confirms your employment history, criminal record, disciplinary record, etc. It will all (hopefully) be blank, except for this one section. And you can address it if asked. You haven't misrepresented anything.

I say this because a friend once brought up how much he owed while negotiating his salary and they almost withdrew the offer because of it.

Ok awesome, that’s what I figured. No judgments or anything against me and certainly no criminal record. I appreciate the thoughtful feedback everyone.

Or should I get in front of this matter and let HR know my circumstances? Obviously a big law salary will make paying down my debts manageable so this shouldn’t be an issue after several months

Yeab definitely not bring it up. It is not relevant since you can pay the debt with the new salary and it is an uncomfortable topic for the interviewer

As long as you don’t have any major delinquencies, judgments, or bankruptcies, you’ll be fine. Even if you do, you’ll probably still be fine.

Completed my loop for an L5 TPM role last Friday (I split my loop into 2 days — game changer!). My biggest advice is use the peer informal interview to your fullest advantage. I got some extremely useful information from the individual on what the team does and I was able to tailor my examples / stories accordingly.

I heard back yesterday immediately after my debrief that I got the job!

Now that masks are optional at many places in my area for vaccinated folks, I’ve been going out and about without one, including inside of businesses with this stated policy. However, I have seen literally 0 other people unmasked in some stores, and very few at the others. I’ve been getting a lot of mean glares as well.
