Need some help in my soul searching, I love watching tv and movies and I feel like my dream job would be the one/part of the team that green ligjts a tv show (i.e. renews a season of a show). I'm going to a T10 MBA in the fall. What job would I exactly recruit for? Do I recruit for MBB in Media (if that's a thing), do I look for an internal rotational strategy/leadership development program at a company like HBO or Disney, or do I find a random Hollywood startup? What/how should I go about this?

I think it’s great that you know what your dream job is! You mentioned a specific location (Hollywood). I’d start by moving there and doing your current job there and on weekends or in your free time join clubs or organizations related to this work. Maybe in consulting start in the media industry to build contacts and gain insight and then switch! Go for it life is short 🥰🤍

I don't know if it would be my dream job FOR SURE but I know I love watching tv and movies. Joining orgs and clubs could work but it would only be for a few months since I would move to campus by july/august. But thank you for the idea

Would not recommend going back into consulting - try getting in with a content strategy team or distribution (If you’re interested in how people watch), they always look for MBAs. Had some experience in distribution prior to consulting and it was the best

like

Yeah - probably the easiest way.

Target UCLA and USC for your MBA and tell the personal story of your love of TV and how you want to build on your current skill set and figure out how to apply those skills to make X impact in media/entertainment. Start looking for a pre-MBA internship or an externship from your consulting role so you can get some meaningful industry experience. You might look at some of the non-profit organizations that set you up with consulting projects for small organizations - perhaps you could get paired up with a media company.

But ya I was looking for pre-mba internships

I was in the same spot coming out of undergrad, and then I lived in LA for 3 years and realized how weird and relationship-based the Media culture is (like, if you think people in consulting get promoted based on who they know, Media is next-level) and it put me off a career in the space. I would agree with the comment above saying to move there first and see how you like the crowd before you commit, they’re... peculiar.

I spent 3 years trying to build social circles in the city, It’s hard even outside “the industry” it’s just a strange place. So I would say attend some mixers or networking events, particularly if you have any alumni-in-the-industry get togethers from college, those were probably the most helpful events I attended.

Just want to vent… am I the only person who doesn’t want to stay WFH full time forever? Starting my career virtually hasn’t necessarily been bad, I just feel really disconnected from my team and partner. It’s hard to get to know people casually over teams. Living in my 600 sqft apartment with my boyfriend working in the other room is also tough. It feels like my world is smaller. I just feel like I’m sorta missing out on something.

Fairly confident I’ll get an in industry offer this week! Mixed feelings though... Main reason for leaving is WFH consulting just simply isn’t enjoyable. Getting harder for me to see the value in grinding for consulting. Is this short term thinking off? Do people think weathering this storm will give potential raises / promotions soon? I just don’t see consulting going back to what it use to be for ~2 years. I’m a consultant level going for promotion to manager.
