Dogs are cool, but cats are better.
I’ve had three dogs over my lifetime and they are lot of responsibility. If she’s not willing to make the time to walk the dog, then don’t get one. Getting a dog and then rehoming the dog can be traumatic for them so, it’s not a decision that should be taken lightly.
That being said, despite all of the work, the love my dogs have brought me far outweighs any trouble that went into raising them.
Wtf IBM1?
Try fostering a dog for 6-8 weeks and go from there. I’d recommend an older dog if you don’t have experience house training dogs.
You need to provide more details.
Urban/suburban/rural environment?
Place within walking distance you can exercise the dog and let it off leash once it's trained?
What kind of dog do you want?
Have you owned dogs in past? Grew up with them?
I am so hard pro dog but also know you need to match the dog and environment to give the dog a happy life.
Also know that regardless of your travel, whoever is caring for the dog should plan on giving him/her an hour of exercise a day. If you're evenings are free (ie. no kids), this can actually be really fun to make part of your routine. I made a lot of great friends in my 20s and early 30s at the evening dog meet up in the park.
Some toy breeds/mixes you can get away with less exercise, but you really need to work hard to get them to behave with strangers and other dogs as they can become spoiled super easily.
I'd watch some old episodes of the Dog Whisperer so you can see worst case scenarios and also get an idea of how to treat the dog from the get go to establish good behaviors.
I know this sounds over serious, but sooo many people return dogs after not realizing the commitment it takes to keep it healthy and balanced. And those that don't return but also don't exercise or practice good ownership end up with monsters that dominate their life. No dog parks, no guests, you end up catering your whole life to accommodate the bad behaviors of your K9.
Ok I will stop rambling now..
Your GF is right, cats are easier, but dogs are sooo rewarding. She will fall in love within a few days.
Also, an awesome dog trainer can work wonders and teach you how to best communicate with your dog.
Always a dog person but walking was a burden on wife when I was traveling. For last 12 years have had pair of cats we spontaneously adopted. I’m allergic (2 hospital visits first month) but one pill a day and no issues.
After 6 months a vet asked us if we had cats before. He commented they act like dogs more than cats. We just tested them like we had treated dogs. They follow us around and are more affectionate than any dog we’ve had.
Other than the male waking us up at 5a every day by pushing things (lamps, phones, etc) off cabinets, all good.
When I’m off the road though ... getting a dog. And will also have cats.

Get the dog, lose the wife.
I think a grumpy cat would be a good compromise
Get both and have them grow up together.
You mean a dog and a grumpy cat! That would be awesome!!
If your planning on having kids a dog is a great starter child. If not then listen to your wife. I've had both, I hate having a dog as he's so clingy and I have to walk and take care of the dog. Cats are easy.
Yay or nay?
Nay. Your wife is right. She will be walking that dog which needs a bunch of attention while you gallivant across the country.
We had the same exact argument about walking the dog. It takes a lot of commitment.
We both share the responsibility as she started going to work now and I'm WFH. We still sometimes argue about who's turn it is. Got to give it to my wife for taking care of the first shift in the AM no questions asked.
Let me know if you have any questions from my experience
Need to solve the dog walking problem 🤔
Will you have a yard? Important to know whether the walk is for elimination or exercise. If the latter, perhaps you could compromise on a nice middle aged couch potato dog who doesn’t need a lot.
Not for nothing, walking the dog can be a really pleasant obligation.
Is there a vote for “no pets”? That’s what I’d do.
Don’t get a dog unless you’re ok with hiring someone else to walk it when your wife doesn’t want to. It’s not fair to her to have to take care of it when you’re the one who wants it. It’s not necessarily cheap, but doable. I worked with a consultant who had a few pets and hired a pet sitter/walker Mon-Thurs when she travelled. Maybe your wife would be ok with sharing the duty while you travelled with a dog walker
I’ve had/have both. Cats are great for apartments and I agree they are low maintenance - litter box, food and water dishes, and you’re done.
Dogs love to be outside - not just for bathroom purposes, but they love to explore their surroundings. So, walking is essential for them and you get some good exercise in the process!
If you and your wife can’t agree then it’s best to shelve getting a pet for now. When you’re ready be sure to adopt from your local shelter! We got our dog from a local shelter almost a year ago and she’s awesome!
If you get a cat just make sure you have a place way out of the way to put the litter box or you will smell it at some point no matter what you do. Cats definitely bother you more than dogs bc you can’t really crate a cat at night. So depending on their snuggle needs you may have interrupted sleep. I have a cat that jumps up and purrs in my face and pats my nose at 6am....for no reason. But you don’t have to walk them. We have 2 cats and a big dog (husky mix), and I always feel like 1 small dog (maybe corgi sized) would be a compromise. I learned there is a Corgidor the other day...corgi lab mix. Looking into it for when we need to replace pets in like 12 years ;) I had the same argument about the dog and that I didn’t want to walk him, but we have a yard and he’s well trained so I throw the ball with him instead if I don’t have time to walk him. Good luck! Pets are great

I think you should respect what she is saying. I am not saying don't get a dog cause she prefers cats, I am saying "if you get a dog, don't expect her to pick up after you because you are traveling, specially since she is telling you from the start"
