Need some wisdom on my potential error:
I recently stopped contributing to 401k to put that money into paying down massive MBA debt instead.
I know there are tax savings and money will grow at compound rate, but paying off debt that will severely limit my short term options is also important no? Also, I have a regular brokerage acct w/ Betterment that I'm treating like a 401k (won't touch it, will add to it eventually), but unlike 401k it provides liquidity if i need it.
Thoughts?

Mentally paying off loans can be a huge relief. No issues with prioritizing those.

That being said, student loan refinance rates are extremely now low (2-3.5%) so the optimal decision in terms of wealth building would be investing (taxable or non).

I personally would recommend shifting towards a blended approach where you contribute to all but pay down your loans primarily. However all in all that won’t affect things too much.

helpful

If student loans are federal, probably makes sense to hold off on paying anything until just before the end of the moratorium (currently scheduled for September), even if just putting would-be payments into a HYSA. At that point, should have a clearer image of student loan forgiveness and, assuming no or insufficient forgiveness, you can refinance.

Assuming your student loans have a reasonably low interest rate, it may still make sense to prioritize them for emotional well-being and early career freedom. But contributing a small amount to 401k still makes a lot of sense.

Note that if your company is matching 401k, you should contribute so as not to leave money on the table.

Generally curious how many companies offer phone reimbursement? My last gig did not but the current one does. Legally it seems, all employers are required to do so if we use our phone in literally any capacity (video call, slack, teams, emails etc). How prevalent is the issue of not reimbursing phone dues?

Should I bother getting someone to do my taxes vs taxfreeusa? Is there anything a person would magically find me that I qualify for that taxfreeusa/turbo tax wouldn’t alert me of? Gross salary last year was $140,000, I move from one apartment in CA to one in TX, I bought a motorcycle in CA, and paid student loans, but apparently I don’t qualify for the student loan reimbursement bc I make too much (which is bs bc all my salary still goes to them anyways)

Base range for a full-time offer should range between 90-100k, but definitely taking a risk.

I know this has been asked before but hoping for some tactical starting points. I grew up in an awesome ... but very blue collar family. My parents didn’t invest so I wasn’t exposed to it growing up. I would like to start. Would some 🐠 be willing to help a newbie navigate the best way to start. Would love recommendations on books, websites, podcasts etc. I have a relatively low risk threshold so I would like to start small and build up to a larger portfolio. I hope that makes sense. Thank you!

Don’t know if this is the right bowl but I’ll give it a shot. Does it make sense to buy a boat? I’m 23, currently renting in the DC area. I can easily afford it but don’t have a SUV or anything to haul it. It would strictly stay in the water. I want one really bad and just miss being home In the summers and out on the boat with my friends. I don’t want to make an impulse decision but man I also want my own without derailing my retirement, eventual house down payment, etc.

For people who live and plan to buy a home in HCOL cities, what’s your savings strategy for a down payment?

Currently 26, make $120K and put about 10% post tax into a Roth 401k and then anywhere from 20-40% into VOO. Goal is to be able to afford a down payment for a $1.5M home in 5-7 years.

Sometimes I get a bit concerned I’m not putting enough towards retirement, but with how expensive homes, can’t really budget any more towards it.
