You might need to run mock drills once in a while with your granparents. Simulate an attack and see how they respond. Maybe include your mum or other family members?
This sounds harsh as I type it but we did something similar for my gran and now she's suspicious of anyone calling her. Een when family calls she actually asks questions like "remember xxxxx's birthday and that silly cat cake?"
That is a good idea!
A caller pretended to be a family member by name, and was crying saying she was texting and driving, got into a crash, and needed bail money. The "attorney" told my grandparents to take 20k in cash out of the bank and take it down to the courthouse, and they would get it back later that week at her hearing. Then they called back saying, you know what, we can just come pick it up from your house to make it easy for you. Walked up to their front door and took it from them.
Grandparents went to the cops, but the phone number was spoofed they think, and they don't have cameras. Doubt they will ever see that money again. Definitely going to install cameras... But what else could I do to make sure it doesn't happens again. They are in late 80s and 90s, so not as sharp as they used to be. Years ago they got a similar call claiming to be my brother in jail and she was smart enough to check in with my mom if my brother was ok.
Short of having a very hard conversation about someone else in the family controlling their money you just have to hope this taught them a lesson. It sucks but there's a reason these scams work.
That's the worst part is that it's not about being stupid, there are very specific triggers and psychology that these scams use. The best thing you can do is make sure they don't feel worse and let them know that they should always call someone else if money is involved. I'm sure they just didn't want to bother anyone.
Happened to my in law. What we ended up doing is giving her a new phone/number, loaded it with contacts and it blocks unknown numbers.
We haven’t experienced that yet, had any issues. What happened w my in law is that someone called her and said her grandkids was in an accident, and she replied with her grandkids name and they just preyed on her after that. She ended up losing 5K in GIft cards through Walmart
