Since you have a primarily professional relationship, I think one of the nicest things you can do is say, “don’t worry for one minute about work. I will take care of everything we have been working on together.” And then do so. That is something that you are uniquely positioned to do.

Lovely that you would like to do something. My mother is a breast cancer survivor, so I relay this from watching her struggles: laundry help is great, meals if she doesn’t have a partner to cook them, warm socks/blanket if she is undergoing chemo (depending on the type of chemo it can cause you to get cold while you receive it), scar cream if she is having surgery, wig shampoo if she is having a type of chemo that causes hair loss and she is getting a wig. The biggest thing you can do is let her know you’re thinking of her and ask if she needs help with specific things (avoid “what can I do?” because that puts the burden on her to ask for the help. Instead, try “I would love to drop off some meals for you this week. Are there any dietary restrictions I should know about first?”)

One of my best friends got breast cancer in college. It was really difficult to find appropriate ways to support her at first. Even with close friends, people aren’t always open about what they want/ need from their support system. I found initially just talking to her about it was helpful. It allowed her to open up and discuss things she might have been holding in to appear “strong.” Later on, I would support fundraisers she supported or joined, as well as Gilda’s Club (a cancer support group she found really helpful). During her chemo treatment I sent her some little gifts like puzzles for when she was at home. She moved back in with her parents at the time, but helpful services like food, cleaning would probably be really helpful for those living on their own. Best of luck to her and wishing her a full recovery. Cancer sucks 😔

You say you "found out" - does this mean she told you? Or you heard from a third party? I know you mean well, but please check with her before you do anything. Everyone handles things differently so she may feel uncomfortable with this kind of support from what is close to a co-worker relationship.

Go forth and support! I've heard that chemo rooms are often cold, so a cozy scarf or wrap to wear on those days would be a tangible thing, in addition to any services you decide on.

Agree with Senior Counsel 1. The more personal suggestions in this thread are thoughtful, but potentially inappropriate/awkward in this context.

When my mom was diagnosed in her late 40s (now 12 years cancer free as of July 😎) what she appreciated most from friends and co-workers were cards and notes of encouragement and support. Just letting her know that they were thinking of her and supportive of her meant the world.

Food delivery is great too, cooking can be exhausting!

I think a fun care package with a sweet note would bring a smile to her face. A book to read during chemo, puzzle or coloring book, spa goodies (lotions, masks, bath bombs), warm sweater, water cup, etc. In your note you can let her know that you’re happy to help in other ways.

When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 70s, I moved her across the country to live with my family so I could manage her care. My bosses let me have complete flexibility because during chemo and radiation treatment she had to be in the clinic every other day. What would be super helpful is volunteering to take over the responsibilities for getting her to the hospital or cancer center for a week or two to give her family a break. Another thing some friends of mine did for another friend was to create a schedule for the entire time of treatment and had friends volunteer to take charge of meals for specific days. People either made a meal for my friend and her family or sent gift cards to places that delivered.

I’m a breast cancer survivor and I’m in-house. One outside counsel sent me a Pajamagram, which was so kind, and we are personal friends. Another connected me with other survivors early on in treatment, which was also kind. Some just studiously avoided the topic altogether to avoid potentially embarrassing me.

A colleague shared with me the presentation they have prepared for their promotion case. I worked with them on multiple projects during the year and I can clearly see that some of the claims on the deck are wild exaggeration or lies. For example, managed changes in scope for Project X including contract changes. Plot twist: there never was a change of scope for Project X and the contract is exactly the same. How can people be so dishonest? How far can you go before truth catching up?

Here's the situation. I'm a freelance accountant. I have several part time clients, and one main 30-40/hr/week client. This is about the big one. Again, I report to the COO. The COO is "working" in exchange for greater equity in the company and a crap ton of pay along the way. Cont.

In a world of remote consulting work…. How long can the US maintain its high premium over European and, esp. developing market consulting? Both price tag to clients and significantly higher salaries for the people. I imagine may move faster at Big 4, etc. than MBB, but within MBB the huge cost and salary differentials feel… increasingly hard to maintain (even though I think the differential has actually gotten bigger, not smaller in the last two years). Thoughts?
