It is 100% okay to quit on your own terms. Jobs are not worth the mental stress if you can pay the bills! If you cannot pay the bills, there is a different mental stress associated with that. But if you can, keep moving till you find something more meaningful!
I second this! Life is short and being burnt out/unhappy simply isn't worth it! I love what youre doing in your time now before making your exit!
I quit a job without another job at the beginning of this year. It was a very comfortable job market and I had savings so it felt safe to do it. I was terrified of doing it but it really was what I needed. Having a few months to decompress and chart my next step was amazing. I also found that I have a much healthier relationship with work in my new role
This is such helpful perspective and I’m so happy you had this experience. Did prospective employers have any issues with the gap or did people get it? I run into so so many dated mindsets in the folks who hire for my level and am worried that it’ll work against my next step. For example I told my boss (Pres/CEO) that I think I need a break and he gave me tips for daily productivity habits lol. 🤷🏻♀️

I’m quitting next week without something lined up. I’ve been interviewing for the last 2 wks, 15 interviews total so far, so I feel comfortable I’ll rebound quickly, and I have enough saved to keep my current lifestyle for 36months.
I feel you. I’m literally crying on my way into work each morning. Trust your experience, your skill set, and your network.
It's OK to leave. Thinking about it myself. You've only got this one life, being miserable should not be accepted.
I have switched jobs (within and outside of consulting), taken long vacations, taken a LOA, and I just can’t seem to shake the extreme burnout I have acquired over the past couple years. It is scary, but I think I am going to take the leap in a month or so and resign with nothing lined up….I plan on traveling some, exploring possible work outside my current field (software engineering), and generally giving myself the space to figure out what I want do next. Life is too short for this level of misery. I think I still enjoy software, but any form of corporate nonsense and politics makes it abjectly repulsive as a job to me. I have the experience now to see ladder climbing and chasing more money is not for me.
Thank you these messages are so validating and encouraging. This is definitely not how I want to live anymore.

It’s ok to leave, as a matter of fact it’s in your best interest to leave if your current position makes you feel this way. Making this decision meaning that you are taking responsibility of yourself, your career, your life to make it better. A lot of people are suffering /not happy about their work, but not everyone has the coverage and determination to make a change for themselves, so that along proves your strength and it will be rewarding in the long run.
I walked away from a toxic job with nothing lined up some time back. Best decision of my life. I’m starting to feel the beginning of burnout again but there is a lot of not normal going on here right now.
I feel the same and the doctor recommended stress leave. I am considering it so I can give myself time to heal from burnout and then focus on finding a new opportunity.
I feel this on every level. I’m in nursing management and seriously considering just going back to 3 12’s so I don’t have to put up with the BS anymore (and make more money traveling with less stress!!)
If your job is making you feel that way, your only regret will be not quitting sooner.
And if you’re worried about a resume gap, just call yourself and freelancer / consultant whilst you look for a new gig.
It will all be fine. 😊 Good luck.

Does your company have LOA for situations like this? Many do so check into that cuz your health is important
Also, with 3.5% unemployment and rising corporate profits, we haven’t even begun a recession yet. So understand when we are in an actual recession, the debate you’re having with yourself isn’t whether to quit next year, it’ll be more along the lines of trying to make ends meet by the end of the week
I quit my toxic job but I had another job lined up bc I’m single and don’t have a partner to help while unemployed
