Don’t expect a raise in the next two years and then determine what you’ll be happy with. Don’t settle for a one time bonus if it won’t make it right for you and don’t believe the promise of “looking at it in 6 months” - unless it’s a small, private shop. The machine eats promises like that unless they are concrete
Yes, ask if the budget can stretch to 105,000. If not, ask if you can be raised to that at one year.
Tell them that’s less than what you’re making now and see if there’s anything more they can do. If not, see if they can throw in some additional moving $ or a sign on bonus
Work a bonus into the package to get you nearer the $ you’re after. Bonuses aren’t classified on the cost sheet the same way as FTE salaries, so they can stay within their budget and you have more wiggle room to negotiate a better deal
Are you making a lateral move and staying at mid level, or moving up to senior? That might be the top of the band for mid. To get what you’re looking for you’re going to need a senior title
Ultimately, i want the job but wanna make sure I maximize what i can get without asking too much / looking bad. Thanks 🙏
So how did I t work out ?
Really appreciate all the advice here. Asked to see if budget could accommodate 104k ($2k/ wk which sucks considering i was at $2500-$3250/wk freelance) and told they would see what they could do 🤞
Good luck. Hopefully things like insurance and paid vacation - or any other perk you can take advantage of - help offset the freelance difference a bit
ALWAYS counter - they always have money on the table. Do not leave money on the table!!!
Counter. If they want you they will find the money. I’m tired of companies low-balling our talent and time. Especially if the job turns out demanding lots of hours
At least ask for six figures. You’re not far off.
Counter. This is your best chance to make a big impact on your salary most likely
Take the 95 and be happy to have a job in this trump economy
What’s then full spectrum of the offer? Benefits? Vacation? 401k match? PTO? Insurance.... that all plays a roll. When you add up all the additional benefits you might be at $105... $110k at best.
To win the game, it’s not about getting the most salary you can get. The objective is to find a fair exchange of value between what you provide to them and what they pay. If they perceive that they are paying too much for what you can do, they either won’t hire you or, later, they will swap you for a better deal. The same works from your POV; if what you are providing is worth more than what they pay, they risk losing you to another employer. You have to know what you are worth in the marketplace. If you are too expensive, even if you get the job now, you’ll be the first to get cut in difficult times. By the way, $3000/week freelance translates to about $95k/year for a staff position.
One should never compare the free lance rate with JUST the base salary. As a FTE, you get vacation, insurance at minimum and maybe other additional perks/benefits like 401K, training, etc.
Look at Total Compensation package and not just salary.
