Wife and I live in Houston on ~$155k.
We have a 4,000 sq. foot house
Two luxury cars
Eat out daily (we both hate cooking)
And still have quite a bit left over (max 401k and Roth plus monthly liquid saving)
Honestly not many downsides that you haven't already heard of such as heat and humidity, hurricanes and oil & gas client focus. None of which are huge downsides in my opinion
My house is about 20 miles from downtown. If I lived in town it'd be more expensive, but no. You cannot survive in Houston without a car. Even if you live in town.
In the suburbs we have very good schools and property taxes to match. I pay about 2.9% of my house value in taxes and that's about middle of the road to cheap in my area
No income tax in Texas...but do you want to live in Texas?
Houston is a dump
P1- I will fight you. Give me your address
Schools, healthcare, and culture (arts, entertainment, food, etc.) are hard to beat in Boston. You will also be spoiled for choice when it comes to places to visit in the near vicinity ( 100’s of seaside towns, Newport, Portsmouth, Portland, NH/VT mountains, etc etc etc) whereas Houston is somewhat isolated. But you pay for the privilege with high cost of living, horrendous traffic, and brutal winters. Worth it in my opinion (moved here from a low COL city in the south)
Houston is hot as balls. I think my shoes melted the last time I was there.
Apparently they are having a huge mosquito problem right now
Damn. That’s nice. Can one get by without a car in Houston? Asking bc city life is awesome. And how good are the schools? Asking bc I justify my painful taxes by the public schools my kids get
BA1, the urban sprawl in Houston is ridiculous. Hard to imagine how bad it is until you've spent a good amount of time there. Car is required
That in boston you are on average getting atleast one sports parade every year.
Ted Cruz as your senator vs only state then went for Hillary in every district.
I actually quite like Houston. Love living in luxury well below my means.
Summer is rough, but vacations, AC, it's fine to deal with for 2-3 months to have 9-10 months of very comfortable weather!
Huge diversity, awesome food of all varieties.
I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why people feel like owning a car is a bad thing... Never been through a major natural disaster I guess. Owning a car to me brings freedom, and an exit strategy.
Not all aeeas/suberbs are equal... Pay attention to flood risks.
Why not consider Austin, Dallas, Charlotte? Way less of an urban sprawl.
The cheap houses in Houston are super far from anything
Boston winters vs. Houston summers
Supply and demand, there's a reason it's cheaper to live in Houston, not much going on down there, and the exit options within Houston much narrower. I used to live in Houston, despite the low COL I would never return, but it's great for some Not sure if this is true for other firms, but at BCG, Texas offices also work WAY more than the firm average.
There are middle grounds, e.g. Chicago, Seattle, not that expensive, most if not all of what you'd get in the alpha cities.
BCG1- That may have been true 20 or even 10 years ago but just look at the difference in how Houston fared in 2014 vs in the late 80s. Totally night and day signifying our increasing economic diversity.
I was around then, the economy held up better than in the 80s to your point, but it was still felt super strongly. Houston is still primarily a one industry town
Also things are green and grow easily.
I love my pool and palm trees. Never water my grass or plants.
But the common grass is more like a weed than what I knew as grass growing up.
Ants... OMG be careful. Growing up as a kid we played with ants and ant hills.... Try that here and you will wind up in a hospital... If you live at all!
