I am confused. Whose referral do you need? Your connection's or someone else's? If it's your connection and you're friendly with them, ask them! I wouldn't be shy about it.
I would start by asking myself what value does my resume and my experience hold. I always think it's important to think about what you can bring to any company, and then you may decide if asking for a referral is worth it.
You don't explicitly need to ask for a referral, but you may want to let your contact know that you're looking for one. You could say something like, "I'm currently in the market for a new opportunity and would love to hear if you have any contacts at your company or elsewhere who might be interested in meeting me."
It can be difficult to ask for a referral, but there are a few ways to do it. One way is to mention that you're interested in working at their company and ask if they know anyone who might be able to help you out. Another way is to mention that you're looking for a job and would love any recommendations they might have.
