Never been a fed. I've heard that once you make a cert (e.g., GS-13) the gov can bring you in at the same pay as you were making in industry (match base pay) as long as you have pay stubs and the pay falls within one of the steps for that grade... Is this true??? Agency dependent?

Basically true.

It varies by agency and org within an agency. I'm a former fed HM and was one at several different agencies. One agency was strictly step 1, another was anywhere from step 1-10, another varied from step 1 to step 1-10 to max of step 5 by org, and so on.

The only non-SES way to hit $200k is to get a position at one of the financial regulators that has an expanded pay scale, such as FDIC/SEC/etc, and those are absurdly difficult to get into. The highest current GS pay in the DC area is $176,300 for 15 step 7-10.

Yes, what everyone said - HOWEVER, they're not required to and it's dependent on a number of things: number and qualifications of applicants, agency/organization budget, etc. Done agencies will flat out tell you that they're only hiring new employees at step 1, some are more flexible with pay.

helpful

As a current hiring manager in the govt, your statement is basically accurate. However, in order to justify the higher step, the hiring manager must demonstrate (to HR) how the same job couldn’t be performed by one of the candidates at the entry step. Your qualifications are important, but there’s a little more to it. You’ll really need the hiring manager to be willing to fight for you.

For everyone chiming in, how big a leap would this realistically cover? I’m struggling to see someone making $200k swapping badges doing the same thing and make the same $200k as a govvie. I’d love to be wrong here but there’s no way.

Understood. I'm looking for stability that comes with gov work. And being done with business development and proposals. My client is aware/supportive of my intentions to make the jump to fed. And the opdiv I'd be joining is very top heavy so doubt there will be any issue coming in at a higher step.

You would need to be applying for a GS level that covered the salary range of your current position. I would say 200k would probably be hard to get unless your at the top tier of GS15 or so which is only top leave agency officials

GS does not reach 200k. GS15 step 10 even at high locality pay areas caps around 160-170. 200k isn’t happening.

Hi - I’m a PM at a reasonably well known company. I don’t have an MBA and see lots of folks asking about needing that to get an interview at FB, G or A. I can confirm that an MBA isn’t a hard req as I’ve had recruiters reach out and offers to move forward to interviews before. I’ve never decided to actually move forward though as I don’t see the appeal. I really want to know, what’s the thing that excites you all about working at a massive FAANG type company?

Received an offer from a company in a different vertical to work on tech / IT strategy. Would you take this offer? Info below.

YOE: 3

Current Comp: 105k in tech strategy (including annual RSUs) with 10% bonus

Offer: 145k (Base) with up to a 14% bonus

I'm conflicted by the offer because it does not include any equity unlike my current employer. I also believe that the future is incredibly bright with my current company. I would really only jump for the $$. Am I making a mistake by staying?
