Boston 1000% over Hartford. Hartford is an ugly city, and to be honest fairly dangerous. Boston is beautiful, so much to do, super clean. I have lived here a long time, and would choose Boston 100 times out of 100. The only downside is Boston is more expensive but really not by much and the upside if living there is enormous. When I tell you it is not a decision, it should be Boston, I am not exaggerating one bit. Also, Boston’s airport is way better than Hartford if you go back to travel.

Lol don’t live in Hartford. It’s a dead city now

I’m from Connecticut. Choose Boston

Hartford suburbs are nice and rich but Hartford is genuinely dull. It's dead by 530 pm because it is the classic north east "white flight" city. Also, the Hartford suburbs (eg Simsbury, Avon, etc.) are some of the most toxic examples of "keeping up with the Joneses" BS I've ever seen. They're also incredibly segregated. Boston suburbs can have some of the same flaws especially if you're looking at Concord, Lexington, Belmont, etc. However, if you live in the city, it's pretty fun and there are some awesome suburbs/ex burbs you can move to later.

The issue is two fold: 1. there's a lot of states in New England that never really drew non-white people (e.g. Maine, Vermont). 2. White flight hit New England hard especially during the industrial collapse of the 70s and 80s.

Agree with above. Hartford is a s***hole. Spent a year there on engagement at Aetna. Went to drug store one night for cough medicine and got mugged.

Definitely Boston. If you did choose Hartford for some reason, I’d recommend a suburb like West Hartford - definitely not a crime issue there, just super suburban lol.

Say goodbye to diversity and culture by moving from Chicago to Boston 🤡

like

Completely agree with SSA1. Diversity in Chicago is highly dependent on neighbourhood you live in. You need to find the right place to live in.

Counter to everyone on this thread, I’m going to say choose West Hartford over Boston. #1 schools in the state, more reasonable cost of living ($500k buys a solid house), diversity, great restaurants and bars, amazing community, more space and access to the outdoors, super accessible airport. Our best friends moved from Chicago to west Hartford 2 years ago and never looked back. Happy to put you in touch with them or dm me for questions. Obviously to everyone’s point Hartford is a dump but west hartford is an amazing place to live and raise a family.

Don't live in Hartford even if you choose to work in Hartford. I would pick Boston for sure

Where is your SO commuting to? That will make a difference in recommendations.

SD1 - you’re right. We are planning to get something around Framingham if we choose Boston. Heard some good review of that area from a friends. SO is okay to commute around 45 if needed and the employer provides parking on premise. So won’t be dependent on public transportation.

Hope y’all make a good dime selling your place in Chicago. The SFH market here in Boston and surrounding towns has been at Hunger Games-level competitive for quite some time

Yes. Saw that. Hoping we should be able to grab one within our budget.

Boston hands down. Can’t beat the city of champions

Now that the CDC says no masks needed indoors if vaccinated, is anybody concerned what that means for kids under 12? I’m assuming that the honor system isn’t entirely going to work (I.e., some unvaccinated people will go maskless). I don’t want my 5 and 7 year olds around unvaccinated unmasked strangers, but it’s also a bummer to stop taking them places. Not that I was taking them that many places, but the occasional grocery store, shoe store, etc. seems riskier now.
