They’re typically better made watches. There’s also the mechanical connection of powering your watch yourself whether it be by wearing it daily or winding it manually. Similar to the feeling of driving stick.
Sorry should’ve clarified, I lumped automatic and manual watches together. Assumed OP was comparing to quartz. Totally missed their point lol.
Welcome to the club! Have one as well and it's a favorite. Manual wind gives me a greater appreciation of the watch. I wind it daily, sometimes twice a day, just because I can and I enjoy it. I can understand, if you're used to quartz or automatic, that it can feel like a chore. But you get into the habit after a couple of weeks and I personally think it gives me a moment to enjoy the sound of it ticking, the feel of winding it, and it's 15 seconds of mindfulness a day that is guaranteed. And it's easy if it's been sitting on the shelf for a few days or weeks. Just pick it up, give the crown some turns, set it, and it's ready to go. My automatics have screw down crowns and dates, so they are not as quick to pick up after a hiatus.
They’re also generally thinner… I like them because they usually feel better on my wrist then an equiv automatic and it takes 10 seconds to wind a watch. I do it without even thinking about it at this point
That’s really helpful. I guess it feels kinda cumbersome now, but may become second nature over time.

Also gives a much better view of the movement (assuming it has a sapphire case back). When I buy a watch with high-end finishing, I prefer it to be manual

Manual winding watching are **typically** vintage watches.
It’s what all watches were up until automatic watches came around in the 50s (could be wrong).
I personally like them because I like vintage watches. If I were to buy a new watch- it would be automatic.
You can hand-wind many automatics, but “mechanical / hand-winding watches are not automatic” if that makes sense

Also half true. Lots of brand new hand winds out there. Some innovative new hand winds with 10+ day power reserve.
Vintage watches are hand winds because autos either hadn’t been invented or were less reliable. Modern mechanical watches are mostly autos, but there are plenty of hand winds because they can be A) thinner, and B) far more ornate. Even shitty ST-1900s, which are Chinese crap hand wound chronos, are kinda beautiful looking through a display case back. Look at a Lange hand wind, and wow, it’s just amazing.
To add - I got the FOIS anniversary edition recently without realizing it was manual winding - I am not really happy with having to wind every 1-2 days …
I get the take around connecting with the watch … but not sure … may be I am too new to this to value it
