Are you really “getting yelled at” or is it just a difference of opinion? There is no one right answer for the majority of things we do, so your manager and SM might just have different approaches. It’s not throwing your manager under the bus if you just tell the SM “manager and I discussed approaching it this way, seems like you have a different approach, we should all discuss together”
Roll with it. Your M is going to review you, not your SM. SM will evaluate M. You're not going to be perfect in everyone's eyes. SM may dislike you for a while, tbh he probably doesn't care about you unless you're trouble for the M. Then when you work for him directly, his opinion will change.
In the meantime, coach M as tactfully as you can, so he looks good to SM. But don't sweat it. He's doing himself trouble by not being aligned. Work for Good Ms
OTOH if M and SM are aligned, you're missing part of the picture. Listen to both of them carefully til you figure it out / learn more. Again, roll with it.
(Cont.) I don’t want to throw my manager under the bus & potentially create an enemy but by not standing up for myself I’m ruining my reputation with this SM and look like an idiot. Any advice??
Carry it forward as coaching and involve you direct manager as well.. talk with SM and M together and solicit feedback directly from SM.
cc your senior manager and manager on all communications. Try to get as much of it in writing so the blame doesn't land on you. If they assign you something ask them if they can send it to you in an email.
When the manager assigns you something, write it up in an email and send it to both the SM and M saying something along the lines of "to ensure everyone is on the same page this is what I will be working on today. Please let me know if any adjustments are necessary."
Next time you get a contradictory comment, involve both in the email chain. They may not realize they're giving you different feedback..
