If it’s still in your background, it’s better to be upfront, own it and then explain what you’ve learned from it. I’ve found that adversity can actually make an applicant stand out because mistakes force you to learn and grow.
Even if you get the job, get the damn thing expunged.
Should I be worried? It’s a 2007 file, took probation without issues, received misdemeanor. Had no issues getting into law school, obviously passed C&F (3 different states in fact) but this still worries me. I disclosed on the form that I have a prior conviction (I never hide it) but still worried. Any thoughts or folks with experience with this?
Is this a federal job? I imagine it would depend on the crime.
My firm does same work and probably wouldn’t care depending on the crime. What was it?
Has it been expunged? In most states, if it's been expunged you don't have to disclose and shouldn't appear on most consumer background checks.
Has not been expunged. Frankly even forgot about it as it’s been a few years now and I haven’t had to disclose it or submit for a background check in years.
What state
Will check that out. Much appreciated. Definitely a misdemeanor (after successfully completing a probationary term) and was fully complete (probation complete, amendment to charges done) over 10 years ago (nearly 11 at this point).
Update. I was asked about it by hiring partner with HR on the call. All clear. Giving notice to my current place next week. Definitely going to look into having it expunged (frankly should have done it a while ago).
