December layoffs anywhere?
Although Amazon has instituted a hiring freeze and layoffs are probably on their way, I went through the loop for a security engineer position at AWS. Before I attended the final interviews, Amazon placed the hiring freeze and called me to ask if I wanted to go ahead or cancel my application. I decided do go ahead Right now I'm waiting for their response and the position I applied to changed from "under consideration" to "no longer under consideration". Thoughts?

Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I love when the left eats their own. Its a race to the bottom and it’s my favorite thing to watch.

If you wear blackface, you deserve to lose your career, your peace, and future opportunities. Go google the history of BF and what it means to African Americans. This woman is stupid and can go to hell. The consultant did the right thing. It’s about time some of y’all learn that 1.) racism has no statue of limitations and 2.) there are consequences for being trash. I, personally, love this song.
P1 - Not knowing about Tulsa and wearing blackface are very different IMO. Plus she clearly knew enough about blackface, but just thought it was funny. The other thing interesting, but separate here is that people at the party now wish they had spoken up. You can see how racist actions (perceived or real) can be/have been tolerated in society.

Something needs to be done about the increasingly authoritarian cancel culture

Firing someone in the KKK makes perfect sense. Firing this woman doesn’t. I’m not making an argument on whether an employer is allowed to fire someone at Will, I’m saying they shouldn’t in this case. I’m also saying WaPo had no business running this. Their clear intent was defamation of character.
In terms of the courts, I don’t think Sue Shafer has a case against her former employer, but I do think she has one against Ms. Gruber and Washington Post.

What’s even the point of freedom if I can’t dress up in blackface /s
Lot of 'racist lite' people in here I see. Blackface in jest irrespective of the intention of the joke is inappropriate - period.
The fact that white people and 'white adjacents' are STILL trying to hold onto blackface in this forum in 2020 shows you just how necessary the movement against racism is.
Why would you wear black face and think it could be negated by wearing a name tag?
Don’t you realize that original producers of blackface also had qualifying excuses as to why they’re not racist.
Don’t wear black face period....
There is no “taking it back”.

Yes, destroying people’s lives will ensure the next generation doesn’t make those mistakes. Clearly, the gentle admonishment tactic didn’t work in the past because the country is still full of racists.
People who hold racists opinions should be punished. If we don’t want to live in a society where racism is acceptable, then we need to put force behind stamping it out.
Pro
Ok. Fear of retribution is a strong force.
Tons of people don’t commit crimes because they know they’ll be punished. Are they resentful that they can’t steal or murder? Sure.
But it’s better to protect people from bad actions (in this case racism) than to worry about a racist being resentful.
Who cares what racists think. As long as they keep it to themselves, then I don’t care.
They’re not going to change their opinions either way, so it’s better to make them aware that they will face public condemnation if their racism seeps from their thoughts into actual deeds.
It was wrong for her to wear blackface at the party, period, even if it was an attempt to be satirical. I can't believe people think this is "cancel culture going to far" smh. I'm speaking up and saying something and hope most other fish on here share my sentiment.

Nope. Lexie is awful for being involved with this. Hope none of you have to work with someone that vile and cruel.

Why wasn't Joy Behar fired for blackface? She even had the gall to deny ever doing blackface when there's literally photos of it, and a past segment when she talked about it. How about Justin Trudeau?
Oh right, the double standard of the left.
A nugget of thought, just my opinion: the reasons driving many people to vote for trump in November is less about them "being racists" (most aren't), less about them thinking he's a good person (he isn't), and more about just being sick of things like cancel culture the left indoctrinates when they get an inkling of power, and even more so that their rules only apply to those who disagree with them--their own are immune. Maybe I'm wrong though, just my opinion.
This thread has too many D's

Hey, if she never wore black face it wouldn’t have been an issue. I mean, she was imitating someone who just got fired for wearing black face. Might not be the outcome she wanted but she is old enough to know the history of black face and to know better.
Chief
This isn’t even a public figure, and she had no intention of being racist. It was a poorly thought out costume. So what!
There’s a huge difference between dressing up as a real person who is black, and dressing as a generic black person as a minstrel (like Northam and Trudeau). Kimmel did nothing wrong. Northam on the other hand....
why does it bother you so much?
Trudeau, Downey Jr... don’t pick and choose...

Goodbye black face lady. Don’t do that anymore

Now, I just need to remember to not dress in black face, no matter how hilarious the folks at the office will find it. I should probably let my friends know too; just in case they forgot, or didn’t know
Oh, hi! Lexie Grüber here 🤗 a friend sent me this thread, and I wanted to drop in to say I have absolutely zero regrets for speaking up. Blackface is racist, period - and so is defending it. 🤷🏽♀️ I’ll keep speaking up agaisnt racism, and I genuinely couldn’t care less about those who get mad about it.
If this is you, get em! Continue to speak out!!!!

It’s a 3,000 word article about a Halloween party. I’m pretty sure this is the full story. Do you think they would have left out the part where the woman performed My Old Kentucky Home in the middle of the party? Hint: she didn’t. There was no racism here.

... yeah that doesn’t actually answer the question if there are other items that may have also contributed to this person being let go.
I think the Sikh principal said it best. Put another way, “let he who hath no sin cast the first stone.”

No I completely understood the quote. It was crystal clear. However, racist behavior has been forgiven and overlooked for quite some time. That forgiveness and lack of consequence for the behavior is why people feel so free to bring the foolishness. Maybe people will think twice about wearing black face to a company function. I bet none of you on this thread will make this “mistake”.
Chief
Accenture must be so proud.
OP - what is your play here? I always question people who go so hard to protect racist actions (real or perceived). Even throwing in the occasional comment to make people think they would be against “real” racism if they saw it
If the viewpoint expressed in a response had merit, it wouldn’t be condemned. I would understand the perspective as reasonable. And to be fair, I don’t think OP’s viewpoint is egregious. I just think she/he is going extremely hard for this while not fully reflecting on the history of her actions that resulted in the firing. We can agree or disagree on the firing, but mildly insensitive, naive behavior, microagressions, etc. have been incredibly damaging to orgs and society. I believe that should be acknowledged and treated and such.
Chief
The authors said the person “harassed them” and was “intentionally racist”. That’s a stretch.

OP - is it possible we don’t have the full story here? Maybe there are other incidents or issues that the editors at Reason (or the Washington Post) didn’t include.
