Yeesh. Never a good sign when a manager comes in and labels people as slackers on day one. Remove the concept of a slacker from your thought process or you’ll be unable solve the problem that is slowed or reduced productivity. Maybe they’re depressed, maybe their mom has covid, maybe you’re not communicating the ask properly, or maybe the role isn’t challenging enough so they delay doing mind numbing work… rarely at this level is anyone inherently a slacker.
It’s not my day 1, been there 6 months and just identifying slackers vs performers
“They’re not giving you a hard time, they’re having a hard time”. Talk to them. Let them know you’re available to chat. Maybe something is going on or they’re feeling overwhelmed and shutting down.
OP also consider they may be feeling burned out.

Has performance steadily gotten worse? If so, you may need to go to the drawing board on how you go about leading them. Are you just parsing out tasks? Do they understand why they’re doing what they’re doing? Are you giving them any sense of owning the solution?
