Inner join over left join every time

As with all things once you learn the tool you'll still need to learn the context. So just be ready to actively seek to understand the data, it source, it's structure, and its Gremlins. Writing a query to return data is easy. Writing a query to return the correct data and answer your question is another matter entirely.

Also learn the difference between distinct and group by, and then start learning Having, and Partition. Also a good idea to learn about the pivot and unpivot functions and how to write dynamic code for pivot when the desired column names aren't known ahead of time.

Think @K3, query optimization can be sold as another separate project and will build your pipeline! Never fix the client's anticipated future problems for free when you can bill for it.

codeacademy.com basic SQL course. Had a similar situation two projects ago, should take 4 hours.

Additionally, I’m assuming your team will have some SQL junkies. Try to find a friendly one and ask pointed questions (after googling)

I’d counter k2 and say left join over inner every time. To me that’s the logical way of thinking because you start from the left and keep joining. Whatever you’re new table doesn’t have, is still preserved in the old table and so data quality doesn’t affect it.

I’d also say learn about group by. If you do a “select column1, column 2, sum(column 3) from table1 group by column 1, column 2”

Basically always group by everything that isn’t aggregated by a function like sum, min,max etc

Also learn where clauses and sub queries and you’re golden

Lol this is problem when you’re an engineer in consulting: I just want to build good stuff, but I understand the business side lol

Oh, I totally understand that mindset. Computer Engineering undergrad with a Master's in process engineering here. Just have to get used to building "good enough" with a great approach to how to make it "the best" if they throw extra cash at us. This business is to make the most margin doing as little as possible. 😀

Bwahahahaha omg I love that. How have I not seen this?!??! I now judge myself.

Lol, are we still doing that stuff? I thought people moved to stuff like NoSQL.

@C1 Banks, utilities, and a lot of other institutions still use RDBMS. Do you have any idea how entrenched these platorms are? I've had to learn COBOL and Fortran for various projects over the years. Not everything is a "sexy" cloud 4.0 engagement.

Hi,
I'm a BMS graduate from a top tier college in India. Have an experience of 1.6 yeaars in the US Mortgage industry (Secondary Market). However, I've resigned in June, 2020. Now, I'm looking for full time roles in core finance and I'm looking towards PE firms/IB. To upskill myself, I've also completed a PE course on coursera. Can someone guide me/provide leads about how could I be considered for an interview atleast? (I've been applying aggressively, but couldn't land an interview yet, help!)

Manifest NYC looking for VP Biz/Dev

Hi all. I’m a new user and I’m so happy I found this app because I’m going through a tough time right now and could use some help. I currently work as a law clerk for a trial court judge and my husband is an ADA for the same county. I’m currently living in small town, PA and I want to move to a bigger city (DC preferred) sooner rather than later. I need to tell my Judge soon if I want to stay on for a second year. Idk if I should stay and get more experience or jump ship now.

Hello!
I’m a student majoring in Software Engineering. I’m starting my third year in a few months and have an internship where I’m learning more about working with an actual team on real-world projects. However, I feel like I need to do more to stand out and have a stronger software background. Anyone have any tips or suggestions for what I should do on my own time to strengthen my skills?

Hi fishes,

Is it true that product based companies have better work life balance than service based. I recently joined a big IT firm after my MBA in process improvement (quality). After two months of working 12-13 hours a day i realize this is not going to work for me. Looking for something less hectic (like 10hrs a day max). Is it only possible in product based companies?
