I dealt with a situation as a manager where the senior I was working with came into a first year job in a similar situation to yours. I had experience in the industry and recognized that a first year job would take more effort on my part and require me to be there for the senior on a more frequent basis. My advice for you would be to talk to your manager and make sure they are aware of your background, the situation and your concerns. By having that conversation, it should hopefully lead down the path of “how can the manager best support you.” Also, hopefully the manager can give you their tips as to what to look into to get familiarized with the industry.
As I mentioned above, the manager should be going into this with the expectation that this job will require more effort from their part, it being a first year job. Remember, you’re not alone in this... you have a team around you!
Hope that helps
Look at workpapers for other clients you have. Also find a client in a similar industry and talk to one of the seniors to see if they can give you wp examples or industry specific sources.
One of the execs on your team should take charge in contacting another EY team in the industry and getting their PY work papers to start from. I’ve been on several 1st yr audits in my 9+ years at the firm and this is how it’s always done
Thank you all in advance!
I’m in the same boat. It’s hell
PS: I am the only senior on this job. I am leaving EY anyway next spring, but I really want to do well at work.
Thanks a lot SM1!
Agree with sm1
Also pad the budget. Stay on top of etc and pad those too. First year audits always have unknown unknowns that will increase time. Also overstaff with other seniors or experienced associates to take the loaf when unknown unknowns are found
Those PS facts should have zero bearing except be sure to train up the staff below you
I would second SM1 - Please be open and voice that. You need a great Onboarding and if you are not given it voice it.
The same thing happened to me but I am not shy so I am way better off now.
Ask for examples of similar clients
@GT1 – similar to advice above, talk with your Manager, ask around for a similar client and pull their file from VIS.
