As for the money, I would say the sky is the limit.
$300k as a CD freelancer isn’t impossible. fits with the pay rate, but you’d have to work all year, vs the 1/2 - 2/3 year freelancers usually work.

CW OP: Nope. Mostly small-ish boutique agencies, actually. Couple of the big guys here and there (McCann, etc) and one gig at a big tech giant but haven't done a pharma gig or BBDO yet. Would love a gig at either just to try it out!

Yeah, not sure why OP’s figure is that shocking. It’s a reasonable sum if s/he is working at a normal CD freelance rate for most of the year.

A lot of full time CDs make more than that so I don't see why it's ridiculous or even that ambitious as a freelancer. Go get it op.
Freelance CW. Hope to raise my day rate from 700 to 850 and work steadily. Problem is I’m locked into a steady permalance at 700...
You can still raise your rate with the same company. Especially when you are declining higher paid gigs to stay at this one.
When I started freelance, I didn’t really know how much to charge so did a certain day rate for a agency. I incrementally increased that at subsequent gigs at different places. When the first agency booked me again a few months later I gave them my new rate and they were fine with it.

If you do straight 1099 then you’ll pay about 100k in taxes in ny.
