Newb Question: Starting the search so going in blind. What roles do you apply for in an house position? I'm an M&A associate, but I look at these in house roles and have no idea what are the types I would be considered for: regulatory? product counsel? compliance? The only one for sure I know I'd get a look is securities counsel...what did others apply to? What doe these other roles do? And are the year ranges hard cut offs? Does 5 years mean 5 years or will the company consider 3-4?

Year ranges mean very little. I’ve gotten bites on roles asking for 10 years when I had 3.5. You can apply to any of those roles, sure, but focus on ones that interest you. There are a solid number of in-house corporate generalist and M&A roles in addition to product or other-team specific roles. LinkedIn is actually solid once you figure out some keywords.

Thanks! Would you say for the most part, M&A makes me a "reasonable enough" candidate for almost any role other than something like litigation focused or IP focused? Also, if a company has multiple openings, how many apps should you send in (gut tells me 2-3 max)? If I apply as a 4th year and am rejected, is it ok to apply again as a 5th year? Job search is pretty new to me since I've really done before was OCI...

Just received an in house offer for a financial company. Been in house at a different company for a couple years, however, the offer is 40% more then what I make now and hybrid (2days a week in office). Just hesitant to accept as I’m comfortable where I’m at but this is a $60k increase in pay. Hours seem to be 9-5:30/6, no weekends. Should I leverage the offer with my current company? I did that last year with another offer and they did match. I don’t. Think they will match but somewhat close.

I continuously have a problem with one of our business unit leaders wanting to have a more “direct” relationship with outside counsel on major litigations. This involves scheduling calls to discuss strategy, etc. when I’m not available. Our counsels are sympathetic, but it’s awkward to need to ask them not to take this person’s calls and/or to brief me after the fact. Anyone else dealt with a similar situation? What percentage do you think the AG is looking for? 70% reusing language vs 30% original language is the estimate at my current role.
