First off, don’t be embarrassed! This is actually one of the hardest things for everyone to grasp starting out because the industry is messy with its definitions.
Think of it as a ladder. You start at the bottom with a FACT and climb up to the creative magic:
The Insight (The WHY): A relatable human truth. (e.g., People hate waiting for the bus in the cold.)
The Big Idea/Concept (The WHAT): The 'hook' or the umbrella solution. This is the bridge between the problem and the ad. (e.g., The bus stop that somehow makes you warm.)
The Execution (The HOW) This is where it gets physical. Is it a billboard? A TV spot? A heated bus shelter? (e.g., Installing heaters in bus stops that activate when people stand under them.)
The best way to tell them apart:
An Idea is a thought you can explain in one sentence without mentioning a specific medium (like TikTok or a poster).
An Execution is what the audience actually sees or touches.
You’re doing the heavy lifting that makes a great creative by asking this question. The industry thanks you.
High praise, thank you! Just trying to leave the industry a little clearer and kinder than I found it. Best of luck to the OP—the 'heavy lifting' is worth it.
AI helped me gain confidence and earned me a merit bump. I use it to help me think things through or gain clarity.
