Newbie investor asked me a question, they have $5k to invest and were wondering if they should put it in an index fund (S&P500 - which is what I’d normally recommend plus DCA thereafter) or if they should buy AMZN given that it is well off of its highs, is a solid company and would, in 12-18 months, likely grow faster than the S&P, as interest rates normalize over that time period, etc. That got me thinking… so I’m asking all of you, what would you do/recommend?

No one knows rn look at the markets lol. We are in an inflationary bear market. No protocol for this

Single stocks are just taking uncompensated risk. Stay diversified.

Would be silly to buy AMZN and cap weighted sp500, considering it's a3% allocation

like

1k in AMZN and 4k in S&P. Anything can happen, but S&P is always a bit safer than individual stocks... So let them experiment with a bit of both to find their personal risk tolerance.

The % split is a personal choice at the end of the day. I'd never recommend putting 25% in a speculative startup that's pre revenue, but Amazon does have some semblance of stability.

If the friend is considering putting it all in AMZN, I think their risk tolerance would be happy (and satisfied) with a 75/25 split.

How do you know interest rates are going to normalize? It's likely that interest rates are going to stay above 5% for at least 5 years. Inflation is a very sticky problem.

My investing strategy is just to DCA into an S&P 500 index fund and keep buying and holding. If I understand correctly, the sole disadvantage this has compared to a tax sheltered retirement account is that the quarterly dividends will be taxed? But even so, they’ll be taxed at a lower qualified dividend rate since I’m automatically reinvesting those dividends.

Hi Guys,

I am a ReactJS developer (frontend) with 3.8 years of experience. I currently switched my company but they don't have an opening for ReactJS and kept me on a bench for 3 months and they are telling me now to learn AEM technology and work on the AEM project for now.
They hired me for a package of 16 LPA.
So my questions are is it a good technology to learn? Should I say yes and have a career in it?
Will I get the same package like ReactJS or less? What is future if compared with React?

Is there a definitive guide to cost of living? The obvious cost of living centers (SF, NYC, LA etc.) get covered a lot, but I’m wondering where my city falls. It’s a modest Midwest city with ~100k residents but is a relatively touristy spot. It often feels like a MCOL area but I’m not sure how to adequately judge that, and it would be helpful to know when comparing salaries and the like.

Buying a house with monthly expense of $4900, although my current rent is only $2350. My total HHI with my husband is about $310K. I’m feeling weary of spending this much but we live in a HCOL area near a major city and we have high taxes. It’s hard to find anything decent under $800K. Should I just suck it up in order to be a homeowner?

Have money invested in S&P 500, and now starting to regret not having diversified to international stocks as well. Would want to diversify now to buy a total stock market index, however since S&P 500 dropped more than that index, not sure it’s worth to crystallize losses to do that. The alternative is to stop buying S&P 500 and start buying other markets as separate ETFs, to eventually bring in line approx. with total stock market index. Any advice on the best course of action?
