This is a chicken and egg situation, because you’ll rarely find one of the unobtainium watches on display (think Royal Oak, Aquanaut, SS Submariner) etc.
If I had to guess, if it’s on display, it’s for sale. Some people luck out and get them on a walk-in just by asking, but more often than not you need a purchase history for the models that are most in demand. Either way it doesn’t hurt to ask - if you’re in NYC you’re not getting one, but if you’re in Middle of Nowhere Arkansas your AD might get one or two pieces that will sit around for a bit.
Got it. That’s what I’ve figured - if they’re in store front displays I would find it surprising they’re just not for sale at all.
I’m in Vegas and I’m seeing so many luxury watch stores with amazing watches in the storefront and wanted to see if it was even worth a shot asking for them.

I’ve always assumed if the watch is being displayed it’s for sale. I don’t think you have to be “approved” for a Patek, it’s probably a situation where the rarer watches have a waitlist and ADs will have their own rules about getting people into the waitlist and moving them up. But if you walk into a Patek AD or boutique I’m sure they’ll be very happy to sell you anything in their inventory. I got a Cartier engagement ring for my wife a few years ago and for a variety of scheduling reasons I went to the boutique in workout clothes. They treated me like I was the emir of Dubai.
Good to know! Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t a Birkin type situation. Grew up in NYC and even though most luxury places will sell to you, some wouldn’t provide the best service if you didn’t “look” like you belonged. Don’t want to have a sour experience when buying a $20K+ watch.

And you post here rather than speak to the dealer?
There’s hundreds of people with experience doing this here. Might as well ask!
Plus with COVID not really trying to go door to door in close contact with the dealer if they wouldn’t sell anyway.

Some of the truly rare “masterpiece” watches may actually have purchasing restrictions. Those watches won’t typically be in the common display though. I don’t know for a fact though, since I’m not a baller nor business tycoon.
Hell, look at this blasphemy:
