For some reason, I find a day full of video meetings VERY exhausting.
Work from home (no video) >> Travel and commuting >> work from home (full day video)
Agreed. It would be nice if people kept videos on for only the most important meetings.
You don't need to stay on camera all the time. If your manager demands it have a frank talk with them and explain that it's not very comfortable for you at the beginning of the day - I personally never force anyone to have camera on.
Not at ZS, but the only time I mandate camera use is when leadership is presenting to the team/org, and it's just mandated for the presenters. I don't mind it if I'm in a 1:1 or a similarly small group meeting, but even there I leave it up to the other participants and don't require it.
Cameras can be beneficial, but they're aren't needed in 90% of our interactions as far as I'm concerned.
ETA: I set that tone from the top down and it's the same with all the teams under me.

I see some folks on my team don’t shower and take care of themselves as they would if they were going to an office or client. To me that’s just not ok. Oddly enough it’s almost exclusively the men I work with (thoughts?). Being on camera requires one to pay attention and sit still, and for client meetings I prefer to be present and visible.
I totally agree. It is very exhausting to have to look at a screen all day and you can’t even look at your bigger external monitor if you didn’t buy an extra webcam. Otherwise it looks like you’re not paying attention. But I just want to not have to squint at slides!!!!
I’ve been told I need to increase my video presence to clients and to internal teams. I always turn camera on now for clients but if they turn off their camera, I follow suit. For internal, if I’m the only one or one out of two who isn’t on camera to begin with, then I turn mine on. And if I don’t care about the meeting / just listening I just don’t turn it on.
Try minimizing the screen so it’s like 10% the size and only the person talking shows. There’s something primal about 5-10 people staring at you... not a fun thing to have all day!

If the purpose of the call is social in some kind, then I think cameras being on is better, but if it’s just work related then cameras are not needed imo
I’m clearly the outlier here but I prefer video on. It helps me feel more engaged and being able to lip-read helps me follow the conversation with less effort (my hearing is not great)

If it’s a meeting I would have been in person for (e.g. client presentation, feedback discussion) I turn my camera on. If it’s something that wouldn’t have had a camera before covid, if I’m eating, if there are distractions behind me, no camera
