Product is too fetishized online IMO, probably because of all the thot leaders on social media.

Like any job, it’s got good and bad parts to it.

Can you further explain?

Ditto

Probably a position with a good salary and way to be involved with the products (whether technical or non-technical) while not having to be involved with the actual code development. Having prior SWE experience or being technical is a big benefit as well because you'll have that perspective. Feel like if you switch from SWE to TPM (assuming you are competent at both), then it would prob be way less crazy problem-solving work.

POs/PMs should have good communication, presentation, etc skills since those are crucial for marketing the product. However, POs/PMs can sometimes be hit-or-miss if they are not understanding/willing to compromise on things.

I feel like it’s assumed PMs get to be part of the product strategy but that’s not the case at most places

As a Project/Program Manager, I focus a lot on making sure that we’re allocating resources well. That includes my engineers, researchers, coders and Designers time. Overall that means making sure the company is in budget but my team isn’t overworked and/or overwhelmed

what didn’t u like?

Lots of my classmates from my MBA went that route. Seems like the best position if you're gunning for c-suite without being limited to one specific area.

If you ask me PMs should focus solely on product strategy, but in reality they spend way too much time focusing on wrangling engineers and backlog grooming.

At my company and more specifically my team, the PM solely handles the product strategy while the PO focuses on the latter portion of your response. So I guess it varies between teams and companies.

Their day to day seems so boring lol

Ah, that’s a tricky one.

Are they the only product person involved with the team? If you’ve already given them feedback and haven’t seen any improvement, then getting another, more senior product person around the table could get things humming along, especially if the new PM is still getting into the flow of their role.

But different flows can work for different teams, and my own team always has a leak somewhere so the best I can say is that it’s a continuous process of inspecting and adapting.

Does anyone have any experience in dealing with teams that are boys clubs? My current team has been excluding me from meetings, relegating me to play a role that is lower than my tenure and basically treating me like an overpaid secretary. They’re all men who know each other well so I think that’s part of it, but have no idea how to handle this in a remote COVID world.

Hello everyone, I have been working for a local CPA firm for the last year and a half and my goal is to join one of the Big Four with a focus on assurance (currently I am doing a bit of everything and want to specialize).
Would anyone be willing to talk to me about best practices to start networking and getting my foot in the door in the midst of COVID-19 and remote working?
I really appreciate any advice or insight you might be able to share with me and thank you!

Hyper focus on a new crush - I am in my mid-30s, female and have just now realized how many of my “quirks” are symptoms of ADHD. Recently I have realized how obsessive I become over a new crush. It is literally all I can think about… it will die our shortly, like always, but wanted to see if others also hyper focus on their “new flavor of the week”
