We did it several times at my last job. We got burned once by hiring an entry-level designer who struggled severely and we eventually let go. After that the VP was very big on design tests for candidates. The company also wasn’t attractive to quality designers so there’s that.
We’d also have an in-person editing test as part of the interview process for writers as they were expected to proof read as well. That made sense.
For in-house, yeah: it sucks but it’s their game and their rules. If you want to feel better, you’re probably being given assets from a finished product to see if you can meet/work within standards.
If an agency didn’t offer to bring me in to freelance for a day and expected free work I’d pass unless I was out of work.
Same. With an awful copywriter. Awful. Terrible
I had to put together an hour presentation for my in-house gig. I think it’s common
It’s common. If it takes more than an hour, they should pay you.
@CW2 they said it’s “part of the interview process and isn’t something that will be used by the brand, so there’s no compensation."
It’s not uncommon. But I get that it’s annoying. Honestly, if you want the job, just do it. It’s a great opportunity to knock their socks off and show your value.
Normal
Really...?
