Co workers and peers are great options for references because they can speak to your work more than a manager typically as they are more involved in your day to day. If you do any project based work, project leads are great options too and aren’t technically your manager. Personally I have rarely been asked for references, but you should be fine either way. If they want current manager just have them reach out after you have accepted the offer and given notice

Should I keep applying or give up? I graduated from a mediocre law school 10 years ago (cum laude) and have a tax llm from a good school but mediocre grades(3.1) . I am licensed. I work in public accounting and am at one of the large firms. I do tax controversy, writing, research, international. I applied for tax law firm job over the years - rejected. I interviewed with a small firm today - it's an intellectual step down - I can't do that. Big law still an option or stop disappointing myself?

Kind of embarrassed to ask this, but how does one ask for a sign on bonus? I’ve never asked for one but I always hear about them. At what stage do you ask and how do you phrase it?
