Acknowledge toxic masculinity.
Agree w/ this. I think sometimes the discourse around this becomes derailed b/c I think a lot of people aren’t aligned on the definition of toxic masculinity and get defensive as a consequence. I’ve found these guidelines to be pretty helpful
Normalize therapy in the black community. Not 🙎🏾♂️ but 🙎🏾♀️ and it’s just sad when I mention I have an appt with my therapist in a black setting and get that awkward silence (you know which one)
Agreed - I grew up in a Caribbean household where mental health was almost never discussed and if it was the only help that was offered was to “pray about it”. But I do think that leading by example is extremely important in this area. By telling other folks you’re seeing a therapist regularly you may wind up changing some minds in the long run, and help them get the help they need. Even if it’s just 1/2 people it makes a difference.
Taking mental health seriously is a start. I see how ppl get weird if I mention therapy. So many people in our community think you can pray away mental illness. I always say pray for the courage to seek help.
Yes we definitely need to make our mental health very seriously. What do you think is a good way to jump start that?

I was on the fence. But this post I will say has pushed me over the edge to start therapy. So as a black man thank you OP.
Be active in all aspects of life in terms of physical, mental, and spiritually. Promoting balance in my life for me has been an essential part of managing my mental health.
Toxic masculinity is not a thing. Its a made up concept to degrade hetero men.
@C1 — Hey brotha, I hear you. And I understand where that mindset comes from b/c it wasn’t too long ago where I thought the same thing. Like I mentioned in a previous comment — I think a lot of us get hung up on the wording/semantics of the phrase. I’ve found these guidelines on what toxic masculinity is and isn’t. What do you think?
Talking. To someone. Your wife, partner, boo, friend, brother, parent, therapist. We don’t have to do it all alone. If we start talking to each other we will find that we are not alone and may even help uncover strategies that could be helpful in regaining our piece of mine.
Agree to an extent. I do believe that talking is a great first step b/c so many of us (men) are just told to “be strong and stoic” when we’re really hurting inside. Talking to (non judgmental) friends and family is also very important as well, but, I try not to unload all of my problems on them b/c I don’t think that’s entirely emotionally healthy either. I’ve been working w/ a therapist for the last 5 years now and it saved my life and is one of the best decisions I’ve made thus far.
