Free / friendly advice 2: whatever you feel about the people, culture, work, etc. show up with a smile and fake a good attitude in order to make a good impression — finance is a MUCH smaller world than I was led to believe as an intern so it never pays to burn bridges

Free advice: even if you don’t care to return, so much better for finding the next job if you have an offer in hand. Head down for next 4 weeks will set you up - good luck in future plans!

Oh dang. Well props for owning it.

And don’t worry about not getting the offer - what does it even mean to get the offer as a sophomore? Focus on figuring out what excites you since you’re among the lucky few to get this valuable experience super early on.

Why u wasting your precious time in Ib then? Might as well spend your summer bartending, make some $$$, and meet some people

i like banking, just not the product group and the team. i already have an offer for banking for next summer at a different/better firm so i’m using this summer as an opp to learn a lot so i can kill t next summer when i actually put in effort

If you don’t get the return it’ll still come up in full time interviews if you choose to go down that path. Second the advice that you should do what you can to get the return anyways.

Capital markets is actually a great place to develop high level smarts and various PE firms have their own capital markets teams too. That said the role probably differs a lot from place to place and deal flow is super important. If there’s low deal flow, your lack of motivation is understandable. But for whatever project you take on, do it as if you’ll own the outcome. That’s probably the best advise I got early on. It’s a mentality shift and a good one!

If you don’t like the work this summer, I’d reconsider banking next summer. The work does not change much at the analyst level. M&A might have more modeling and complexity involved vs coverage groups but that aside, shit flows downhill everywhere. There are many ways to make money so if you’re not caring this summer I’d recommend reconsidering.

like

@senior associate 1, thanks for the tip. i’m in capital markets right now hoping to be in traditional banking next summer. if i still don’t like it after next summer i’ll definitely reconsider banking but as of right now, i’d at least like to try out a traditional coverage group, hopefully in a sector i’m interested in! i appreciate all of the advice, friend

Because you’re lazy / entitled / slow learner?

combination of not caring about the return offer and not being able to gel with the team’s culture and the work they do

thanks for all of the advice, guys. i had an offer for summer 2019 before i started this summer. on my life, i planned to come in here and get the return anyway but after really disliking the work and team, i just stopped caring

Is this for a sophomore program?

yeah

unfortunately, dealflow is non-existent at the moment. however, your advice about owning the outcome is seriously value-add, thanks for relaying that!

First year M&A associate. I never came into big law wanting /expecting to gun or make partner, and first year pretty much confirmed that. I'm more than happy to leave for in house in 4-6 years and live a much more chill life. Knowing this, what is the best way to max out the $'s? I'm thinking of considering auto-lateral at year 2/3 and again at 4/5 just for the signing bonus (I know things may change and maybe I wouldn't do it if I loved my firm or got an in house job), but is this viable?
