Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service

Marketing does. 😆
SWE don’t get thrown under the bus that often. The vast majority of tech companies have some sort of structure in place (PMs, engineering managers, program managers, support, operations) to shield SWE from the crazy amount of politics and backstabbing that goes on in other departments.
Sales and marketing are much more cut throat.
SWEs are by far treated like royalty. Marketing and sales gets it when the product is not performing well, and for any other reason things are awry. PMs if there's scheduling problems.

Arguably the only area where SWE is substantially treated worse is the interview process. SWE interviews are absolutely brutal compared to most other roles with tons of leetcode, take home projects, systems design, and tech trivia. Interviews for most other non-engineering roles are typically very chill by comparison.
I only feel abused on Tuesdays 🙃 Really, I do feel pressure, but I'm not sure if I get it the worst.
QA, IT, to name a couple. SWE are looked at as the wizards and producers, QA people are looked at as the assholes slowing things down that only have bad news, and the IT people are looked at as jerks that have a little too much attitude when they explain they can't just "make everything work".
