Lexus. It’s every bit as reliable because it’s a Toyota, but it’s also swanky and the thinking man’s Mercedes.
As someone who had a Toyota as my first car and currently a 2010 Lexus RX 350, I can confirm all of the above lmao. But def reliable if you routinely maintain! The lexus has passed through my family but it’s still doing great! I’ve only has one issue which has popped up very recently and it’s electronic so highly recommend Lexus, specially if you can find one that’s not brand new but a few years old with not a crazy amount of miles, it’ll be good forever! Cons: it takes premium gas which is like $76/gallon rn
I bought a 2019 Toyota Highlander Limited edition in October and I’m loving it- great space for my very tall family and it has does awesome in the PNW snow and slush! It also has a “snow” mode for when the roads are really bad that seems to help the AWD navigate a bit better. It has the 3rd row seating and the handling is amazing. My family has owned several other Toyotas in the last 10 years and the best thing is that a lot of mechanics can work on them- not as easy to find in our area with brands like Lexus. My only complaint is the the gas mileage isn’t great (averages about 18-20 mpg) but honestly that’s probably going to be the case with any SUV!

I think you should get a rebuilt bronco from the 70s or 80s.

Just be aware that you’re buying in quite possibly the worst car market ever. Especially a Toyota Highlander premium, there will be “market adjustments” ranging from 3-12k added on to the car price.
Thanks. I am aware of this, though it sucks
Hey there - having personally had a 2019 Highlander and driven the RX 350 as part of my job I would lean towards the Highlander for you scenario. The AWD handles great in the snow and it’s a more comfortable ride for kids (father myself). Even though the RX350 is beautiful aesthetically you have to consider young ones don’t quite care much for what kind of premium leather they sit in- lol. Storage room is also more forgiving in the Highlander. Hope this helps! Happy hunting!

Check out the Lexus IRL if that third row is important to you (whether for humans or cargo). It’s basically the shittiest 3 row on the market in terms of space, unfortunately.
Great to know! Thank you. Th it’s literally the only reason I considered that over the 350 RX.

I bought my Highlander the summer I graduated from law school in 2008, and it’s still going strong and I love it. We’ve got two kids who are 3 and 6 and it totally works, with one kid you’ll be golden. Others have mentioned that Lexus and Toyota are made by the same co, so you really are just deciding if you want the fancier car IMO which is just a personal preference thing. Unless you’re regularly driving on untreated roads for an extended period, I would agree that AWD should be sufficient.
Thank you for your suggestion.
I absolutely love my Audi Q7 Prestige. It handles snow pretty well, is very comfortable (and luxurious), and has a decently-sized folding third row. It also doesn't seem large on the outside, but feels huge on the inside. I got the Luxury Package with the heated/cooled massage seats up front and heated rear seats. I think the only option I don't have is the heated/cooled cup holders.
I would 10/10 recommend.
Adding a vote for Audi Q7. Handles snow without issue (in Chicago). Heated seats are nice. We have 4 and 1 year olds and cargo space feels huge with third row down and two car seats, but not hard to fit anywhere, if that makes sense. I would shoot for one after they added Apple/Android support because it is better than the normal Audi Nav system imo.
AWD is fine if you're only dealing with light use in snow. Awd is designed to aid in temporary loss of traction on hard pavement, not as a substitute or equal to 4-wheel drive
I myself would stay away from awd models that has clutch actuated all wheel drive. I would not feel comfortable knowing that a clutch is what is driving all four wheels especially in blizzard conditions. You really need 4x4 with a transfer case as you have two gears for 4x4 low and high.
Thank you all! Super helpful.
If you need an SUV for cargo and not a third row, consider a 4x4 pickup. Many higher end trims (particularly Ram) rival luxury SUVs on interior quality and ride comfort.
I have a Ram Rebel but I can’t park it in my downtown parking garage for work so I need something smaller
There’s a reason New Englanders love Subaru, though they are not exactly bougie.
I’m sure they’re great, but I can’t convince myself to drive one.

G Wagon is the way.

4wd is MUCH better than AWD in snow, for what it’s worth. With 4wd and snow tires I feel really good on just about anything. I’ve had awd before and it’s no comparison.
So, I was talking to a coworker, and she recommended the Kia Telluride. Any thoughts on this?
