To expand, my hours are good (some of the best in the firm) but my practice group doesn’t often have to go to court or actually arbitrate, and we settle often. So most of the associates have very little practical experience in terms of taking a case to trial/arbitration as second chair, or even taking depositions, as they are typically not allowed in our industry. I’m afraid of that I have already overstayed in this situation considering the dearth of actual marketable experience. I have a path to make partner, but i don’t believe they’d have any reason to make me an equity partner. Not really sure what my strategy should be? I have thought about trying to go in house within our industry, but don’t believe I’d be able to ever go back to a large-ish firm afterward. Not sure I’d be able to even get a mid level associate gig at a bigger/better firm considering my “experience.”
What market are you in? Lots to unpack and work through from reading this. Depending on where you’re at(firm and market) you can probably move onto something better for your career in the long haul. Always good to think about it before you have no lateral firm options which is approaching. Shoot me a DM if you want to chat.
