Not normally something I have considered but would you all recommend getting travel insurance for an international trip? Got a trip to Belize next week and considering if I should get travel insurance. If so any thoughts on the “patriot platinum international” coverage?

Huge advocate for travel insurance on international trips, especially if you have any serious medical conditions or are going to a less stable country. I’ve had very serious medical emergencies abroad and travel insurance saved me SO much money and hassle. I’ve also used travel insurance to cover additional lodging and food expenses when my destination had huge transit strikes that made us miss buses and flights. For common issues (like delayed baggage), your credit card probably has sufficient coverage. I normally use Allianz, but the key thing is just reading what’s covered and making note of what sort of documentation is required to file a claim.

My parents swear by it. I normally use my CC coverage. It’s not a bad idea for Belize. I loved my trip there a few years ago but infrastructure is pretty lacking and I can’t imagine it has much in terms of widely available healthcare. For reference, when I visited in 2015, the entire country had one stop light and it did not work.

I liked the interior of belize more than the islands. Islands felt kind of dead and not that interesting. There is a just-opened Marriott Autograph Collection, Alaia Belize, on San Pedro. In the interior, I really liked the small Ka’Ana resort. It’s part of both the American Express hotel collection and the Visa Luxury Hotel collection. I booked two nights with the AMEX Hotel Collection, which gave me an upgrade to a villa with an outdoor tub and shower and a $100 F&B credit that covered dinner for two nights, and one night with the Visa Luxury Hotel Collection, at a slightly lower rate, that came with a $35 F&B credit. I also highly recommend the ATM cave. And renting a four wheel drive.

Your CC should provide some travel insurance right?

Confirm if it covers covid related issues (medical, quarantine, etc). Many do not

I have for trips to Africa and South America primarily because I’ve joined travel groups and they require a certain amount of medical and repatriotization insurance. I’ve used World Nomads, Travelex and Travel Guard in the past depending on who had the cheapest policy for the coverage I wanted. Never had to actually file a claim but good for peace of mind

I use Allianz. It’s $250 for me and my partner for the year.

In addition to insurance credit cards provide (plus you can dispute a charge if any airlines goes out of business), your health insurance normally covers at least emergency treatment outside the US. And nearly all airline tickets are flexible now and hotels will almost always waive cancellation fees if there’s a medical emergency or something similar. Given all of that, I’m very much against travel insurance and think it’s a waste of money

World Nomads is amazing. So easy and not expensive

Thanks all for your input! Will check out a couple of the recommendations.

I only recently started getting it and my last international trip (to Japan) coincided with a typhoon. Ultimately we didn’t have to file a claim for anything but it was a big stress relief to know that we had a fall back in an unexpected scenario. Things I never would’ve said in my 20s, but it was worth the cost for the peace of mind!

Hey also planning trip to Belize! Mind if I DM you??

Maybe a strange take but I think that we should be more in touch with our internal bodies. We can send astronauts to the moon and rovers to mars but there’s no easy, portable way to scan our bodies to see what’s going on inside (e.g., a DIY full body xray or MRI). I think this could be the next gen of weighing scales that also show various health metrics, track fitness, etc. It could help with prevention and diagnosis. I guess it’s bad for health providers who make $ today from this. Thoughts?

The pressure at work has increasingly led to a strain on my mental health. I have allowed myself one too many times to prioritize the needs of others (clients, PPMDs, etc.) before my own and the price is showing in my inability to highly perform like once before. I’m at the point of not caring about anything any longer, even if that means risking my job. I’m not sure the reason I’m posting this—perhaps I’m seeking guidance or maybe I just needed to vent. Sigh…
